Charles Dingle se produit au cinéma de 1937 à 1955 (comme second rôle de caractère) et au théâtre, à Broadway, entre 1928 et 1954 (dans douze pièces et une comédie musicale). En particulier, il participe à la création de la pièce The Little Foxes de Lillian Hellman, représentée 410 fois à Broadway, de février 1939 à février 1940. Il y crée le rôle de Benjamin 'Ben' Hubbard, qu'il reprend dans l'adaptation au cinéma de 1941, sous le même titre original (un des ses films les plus connus ; titre français : La Vipère), avec Bette Davis reprenant le rôle de Regina Giddens, tenu initialement par Tallulah Bankhead.Il contribue également, pour la télévision, à quelques séries entre 1951 et 1955.

Brigadier General William Mitchell tries to prove the worth of the Air Service as an independent service by sinking a battleship under restrictive conditions agreed to by Army and Navy. He disobeys their orders to limit the attack to bombs under 1,000 pounds and instead loads 2,000 pounders. Freelance writer Ben Dobson (Skelton) who lands his first full-time writing job at a national magazine, tasked with rewriting other authors' work. His wife Martha (Hagen) uses this as the perfect time to start their family, and four years later pressuring Ben into moving from New York to the suburbs, where he's swiftly living beyond his means. His boss then wants him to write a story on those suburbs, titled "slums of tomorrow." While Martha happily embraces her new environment and friendly neighbors, Ben is cynical about their life there, and decides they should return to the city. Francis Ingram (Victor Francen) is a noted pianist who lives in a large manor house near a small, isolated Italian village. Ingram suffered a stroke which left his right side immobile, and he has to use a wheelchair to get around. He has retreated to the manor house for the past few years—seen by only a few close friends. These include his nurse, Julie Holden (Andrea King); a musicologist (and amateur astrologist), Hillary Cummins (Peter Lorre); a friend, Bruce Conrad (Robert Alda); and his sister's son, Donald Arlington (John Alvin). Ingram has fallen in love with Julie Holden, and has changed his will so that she receives the vast bulk of his enormous estate when he dies. But Julie is secretly in love with Conrad. The change in the will disinherits Arlington and Cummins, and Cummins tries to expose Holden's affair. Ingram, outraged at the slander on his beloved's good name, tries to choke Cummins to death. Only Julie's arrival (after meeting Conrad in the garden) saves him.
