Following the disappearance of his beautiful but mentally handicapped daughter, Avanzio Berzaghi (Raf Vallone) travels to Milan to track her down. Local detective Duca Lamberti (Frank Wolff) investigates the city's pimps and prostitutes for clues, eventually finding the girl's burnt body in a field. Berzaghi vows to find the girl's murderer, eventually tracking down his quarry. Berzaghi exacts his revenge, but finds no satisfaction from having done so.

Vittorio Borghi, journaliste marqué à gauche, traverse une crise intérieure, à la fois politique et sentimentale. Il est amoureux d'une adolescente, Elena, et en rupture définitive avec son épouse, Milena. Il éprouve le besoin d'opérer un retour vers sa ville d'origine : Mantoue. Là, il revoit des amis de son père, des compagnons d'école ou des camarades liés au milieu de la Résistance avec lesquels il partagea autrefois les durs combats d'après-guerre. L'évocation des souvenirs du passé semble raviver les passions et les émotions de la jeunesse. En réalité, l'impression est plutôt fragile : Vittorio s'aperçoit, qu'autour de lui, tout a désormais changé. Les hommes et les situations ne sont plus les mêmes. De son côté, l'idéal auquel il se raccrochait s'est effrité, cédant la place à la désillusion et l'amertume. Entre ses anciens amis et lui-même, la reconnaissance mutuelle n'est maintenant qu'une survivance liée à l'Histoire. Tout s'achève, avant tout, sur l'image d'une salle de danse dans laquelle des adolescents, heureux et insouciants, se laissent entraîner, au son d'un juke-box, sur des airs à la mode. Jeunes hommes et jeunes femmes, très éloignés en tout cas, des aspirations qui furent celles de Vittorio, à cet âge-là.

Vittorio De Sica plays the middle-aged marshal Antonio Carotenuto of the Carabinieri in a remote fictional Italian mountain village named Sagliena (actually the village of Castel San Pietro Romano, in Lazio). He's anxious to marry, and selects young Maria De Ritis (Gina Lollobrigida) as his bride; but she is already in love with De Sica's shy subordinate Pietro Stelluti (played by Roberto Risso). Mistaking her headstrong behavior as promiscuity, De Sica makes advances towards her, but she spurns him. Forsaking the girl to the arms of Risso, De Sica decides to settle for village midwife Annarella Mirziano (Marisa Merlini). The film begins at the start of the rice-planting season in northern Italy. In an effort to escape the law, two small-time thieves, Francesca (Doris Dowling) and Walter (Vittorio Gassman), hide amongst the crowds of female workers heading to the rice fields of the Po Valley. While attempting to board the train for the fields, the pair runs into Silvana (Silvana Mangano), a peasant rice worker. Francesca boards the train with Silvana, who introduces her to the planter's way of life. Francesca does not have a work permit, and struggles with the other "illegals" to find a place on the rice fields. After initial resistance from documented workers and bosses, the scabs are allowed a place in the fields. At the fields, Silvana and Francesca meet a soon-to-be-discharged soldier, Marco (Raf Vallone), who unsuccessfully tries to attract Silvana's interest.

In post-World War II Val Melaina neighbourhood of Rome, Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani) is desperate for work to support his wife Maria (Lianella Carell), his son Bruno (Enzo Staiola), and his small baby.
