China Zorrilla ([ˈtʃina soˈriʒa], born Concepción Matilde Zorrilla de San Martín Muñoz; Montevideo, 14 March 1922 – Montevideo, 17 September 2014) was an emblematic Uruguayan theater, film, and television actress, also director, producer and writer. An immensely popular star in the Rioplatense area is often regarded as a Grand Dame of the South American theater stage.

After a long career in the Uruguayan theater, Zorrilla made over 50 appearances in Argentina's film, theater and TV. Her distinguished career took off in Uruguay in the 50-60s, later she settled in Argentina where she lived for over 35 years and was popular on TV, theater, and cinema. At 90, she retired and went back to Uruguay where she died in 2014.

In 2008, Zorrilla was invested Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government and in 2011, the Correo Uruguayo (the national postal service in Uruguay) released a print run of 500 commemorative postage stamps dedicated to her.

Biography

Son père était le sculpteur José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín (1891-1975), disciple d'Antoine Bourdelle et auteur de monuments importants de l'Uruguay et l'Argentine. Son grand-père, Juan Zorrilla de San Martín, est le poète national de l'Uruguay. Elle a grandi avec ses quatre sœurs à Paris. En 1948, elle obtient une bourse du British Council pour étudier à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art à Londres où elle avait cours avec la grande tragedienne grecque Katína Paxinoú.

À Montevideo, à la Comedie-Uruguayen elle a travaillé dans le théâtre Solís, sous la direction de la légendaire actrice espagnole Margarita Xirgu qui a dirigé (Noces de sang) de García Lorca et d'autres classiques (Mère Courage et ses enfants, La Mouette (Tchekhov), La Folle de Chaillot, Roméo et Juliette, Le Songe d'une nuit d'été, L'Annonce faite à Marie, Les géants de la montagne, La Voix humaine, La Celestina, etc).

En 1961, elle fonde le Teatro de la Ciudad de Montevideo (TCM) avec Antonio Larreta et Enrique Guarnero, avec une tournée à Buenos Aires, Paris et Madrid. Dans la capitale française, elle a joué au Théâtre des Nations et a présenté en espagnol une pièce de théâtre espagnole : La Savetière prodigieuse de Federico García Lorca, et Lope de Vega qui lui a valu le prix espagnol de la critique.

En Argentine en 1971, elle a fait ses débuts au cinéma à 49 ans et elle décide de s'installer en Argentine où elle aura une carrière remarquable à la télévision, du théâtre et du cinéma. Elle a été interdite en 1973-77 en Uruguay par le régime militaire de facto. Lorsque revient la démocratie dans son pays natal dans les années 1980, elle fait un retour triomphal au Teatro Solis.
En 1995, au Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires, China Zorrilla a repris le rôle du narrateur que Igor Stravinsky a écrit pour Ida Rubinstein et tenu pour la première fois par Victoria Ocampo en 1936 dans le théâtre dirigé par Stravinsky lui-même : l'opéra-ballet Perséphone (Proserpine) avec un livret d'André Gide.

Elle a particulièrement bien joué les personnages historiques : Emily Dickinson (par William Luce), Victoria Ocampo (par Monica Ottino), Patrick Campbell (en Cher Menteur: une comédie de lettres, sur la correspondance de George Bernard Shaw et l'actrice Patrick Campbell), Victoria Ocampo, et dans des pièces de Jean Cocteau, Lucille Fletcher, Oscar Viale et son compatriote uruguayen Jacobo Langsner. Elle a également répété a Hay Fever comme «Judith Bliss" et fait de tournées à l'étranger, à Washington, D.C., au Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, en Barcelone, Bogota, Lima, Caracas, Tel Aviv, Miami, San Juan, Santiago, Montevideo, Punta del Este, Sao Pablo, Asunción, et d'autres villes.

Au cinéma, elle a travaillé dans plusieurs films (voir liste ci-dessous). Prix de la meilleure actrice au Festival international du nouveau cinéma latino-américain de La Havane en 1985 pour Darse cuenta, elle a produit une performances remarquable dans Nobody's Wife, Les Gauchos juifs, la coproduction La Peste (avec William Hurt et Raúl Juliá), Edgardo Cozarinsky 's, Guerriers et captives (avec Dominique Sanda et Leslie Caron) et dans la comedie argentine Esperando la carroza (1986).

La Zorrilla a obtenu une large reconnaissance de la part des critiques et du public pour ses performances récentes comme la Mère de Conversaciones con mamá en 2005 (Silver Condor, 2004 Prix d'interprétation féminine Festival du Film de Moscou et du Malaga Film Festival, et aussi en tant qu'Elsa, une dame étrange vieille dans le film Elsa & Fred (2005) qui lui a valu plusieurs prix.

Elle est chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2008) et a reçu l' Ordre de Mayo par le gouvernement argentin et l' Ordre Gabriela Mistral par le gouvernement chilien et des récompenses dans son pays natal.
Elle a été nommée "Illustre Citoyen" à Buenos Aires, Montevideo et d'autres villes argentines. Deux théâtres portent son nom.

En Patagonie, les années 1880 voient les derniers affrontements entre Indiens et colons. Le colonel Garay, commandant de l'avant-poste fortifié d'un village, ambitionne de faire de l'Argentine un grand pays moderne et, pour s'y établir, accueille sa jeune femme Marguerite venue de Paris. Garay prépare l'arrivée de la voie ferrée et cette nouvelle infrastructure attire autant d'émigrants comme l'institutrice, que la convoitise d'autochtones comme Maître Pacheco qui rêve d'accaparer le plus de terre possible. Madame Yvonne, patronne de la maison close locale va l'y aider moyennant des compensations. Pendant que Marguerite, désorientée dans ce Nouveau Monde, s'attache à civiliser une jeune Indienne captive, la garnison prépare une fête pour l'arrivée du train et l'on commence à attribuer les lopins de terre aux soldats les plus valeureux. Les Indiens profitent de ces moments de relâche de surveillance pour passer à l'attaque. Garay y laisse sa vie, ce qui incite Marguerite à demeurer en Argentine.

Musicardi's octogenarian widow, Ana María de los Dolores Buscaroli, called Mamá Cora by everybody (Antonio Gasalla), has four children: Antonio (Luis Brandoni), Sergio (Juan Manuel Tenuta), Emilia (Lidia Catalano) and Jorge Musicardi (Julio De Grazia) with whom she lives and goes through financial troubles. The film opens on Martín Santomé's (Héctor Alterio) 49th birthday, a widower and the father of three children: the eldest, the embittered Esteban (Luis Brandoni); the caring middle-child Blanca (Marilina Ross) and Jaime (Oscar Martínez), a closeted homosexual. He goes to work thinking they have forgotten his birthday, and once at the office, he assigns two new employees to their jobs: the effeminate, nervous Santini (Antonio Gasalla) and the young Laura (Ana María Picchio), with whom he soon develops a bond. Back home, Martín is surprised with a party thrown by his children.
