Choi Min-sik (Hangul: 최민식 [tɕʰwe minɕʰik]; born April 27, 1962) is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his critically acclaimed roles in Oldboy (2003) and The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014). He also starred alongside Scarlett Johansson in the 2014 French film, Lucy.

Together with Song Kang-ho and Sol Kyung-gu, Choi is considered both domestically and on the global scene as among the very top echelon of South Korean actors in terms of presence and talent.

Biography

Carrière cinématographique
Choi Min-sik s'est d'abord fait connaître par le théâtre avant de percer dans l'industrie cinématographique dans le film Our Twisted Hero en 1992 de Park Chong-won, qui rencontre un bon succès auprès des critiques de cinéma et du public. Au milieu des années 1990, il continue de jouer des rôles au théâtre ainsi que dans de nombreuses séries télévisées, dont notamment Moon Over Seoul avec Han Seok-gyu. L'année 1997 marque son retour sur la scène du cinéma avec un rôle de policier dans le film No. 3. Le rôle qui le révèle véritablement au cinéma sera son rôle de terroriste nord-coréen dans le film Shiri. Ce n'est pas le rôle principal de ce film qu'on a appelé "le premier blockbuster coréen", mais son interprétation étonne notamment lors d'une scène où il crie la douleur de ses compatriotes nord-coréens. Le rôle lui vaudra deux prix d'interprétation.

Au printemps 1999, il joue Hamlet au théâtre avant de revenir au cinéma avec le film Happy End, où il joue le rôle d'un mari apprenant l'infidélité de sa femme. En 2001, il interprète un gangster de bas étage à la recherche d'une femme qu'il a épousée sans même la connaître dans le film Failan, aux côtés de l'actrice hongkongaise Cecilia Cheung. Le film est salué par la critique.

En 2003, c'est la consécration avec le film Old Boy. Depuis, il a fait une apparition dans Frères de sang, jouant encore une fois le rôle d'un soldat nord-coréen, ainsi que dans Crying Fist, où il interprète avec conviction un boxeur sur le déclin. Il tient également la tête d'affiche dans le film When Spring Comes où il interprète un chef d'orchestre dépêché dans un village de campagne pour enseigner la musique à des enfants. Choi Min-sik n'a pas peur des rôles difficiles et joue le rôle de l'horrible meurtrier d'enfants dans le film qui clôt la trilogie de la vengeance de Park Chan-wook, Lady Vengeance, ou encore un serial-killer psychopathe dans le film de Kim Jee-woon, J'ai rencontré le Diable.

En 2006, emboîtant le pas à Jang Dong-gun, Choi Min-sik renvoie au gouvernement l'Ordre du Mérite Culturel qu'il a reçu pour son rôle dans Old Boy, afin de protester contre la réduction des quotas de diffusion des films nationaux : il refuse tous les scénarios qui lui parviennent et compte ne plus jouer dans aucun film si les quotas ne sont pas rétablis.

En 2014, outre un second rôle hors de Corée dans Lucy, il joue le rôle principal dans The Admiral: Roaring Currents, un film sur le héros coréen Yi Sun-sin qui devient le film le plus vu dans l'histoire en Corée du Sud.

En 1925, alors que la Corée est sous domination japonaise, Cheon Man-duk, un ancien chasseur respecté, vit avec son fils adolescent, Seok, dans une hutte près du mont Jiri. Après avoir malencontreusement tué sa femme dans un tragique accident, il a renoncé à la chasse et est devenu un humble ramasseur d’herbes dans ces montagnes qu'il connaît par cœur. Le gouverneur-général japonais de l'époque réunit petit à petit toutes les peaux de tigre existantes et devient rapidement obsédé par la possibilité de tuer le dernier tigre restant de Corée, un énorme mâle borgne vivant dans la montagne et ayant déjà tué de nombreux chasseurs. Surnommé localement le « Seigneur de la montagne », les habitants craignent que sa disparition ne ramène des loups et des sangliers. Un groupe de chasseurs coréens, mené par l'impitoyable chef Gu-kyeong, tente de tuer le tigre pour gagner de l'argent, notamment en tuant sa femelle et deux petits tigreaux et en utilisant leurs cadavres comme appâts.

Lucy is a 25-year-old American woman living and studying in Taipei, Taiwan. She is tricked into working as a drug mule by her new boyfriend, whose employer, Mr. Jang, is a Korean mob boss and drug lord. Lucy delivers a briefcase to Mr. Jang containing a highly valuable synthetic drug called CPH4. After seeing her boyfriend shot and killed, she is captured. A bag of the drug is forcibly sewn into her abdomen and that of three other drug mules who will also transport the drug for sale in Europe. While Lucy is in captivity, one of her captors kicks her in the abdomen, breaking the bag and releasing a large quantity of the drug into her system. As a result, she begins acquiring increasingly enhanced physical and mental capabilities, such as telepathy, telekinesis, mental time travel, and the ability not to feel pain or other discomforts. She kills off her captors and escapes.

Following President Roh Tae-woo's declaration of a crackdown on organized crime, Busan businessman Choi Ik-hyun (Choi Min-sik) is arrested for embezzling billions of won from hotel construction companies, and is also charged with intimidation, kidnapping and assault. Busan public prosecutor Jo Beom-seok (Kwak Do-won) is in charge of the investigation, and especially the murder of hotel owner Heo Sam-shik (Kwon Tae-won) by mobster Kim Pan-ho (Cho Jin-woong), with whom Ik-hyun allegedly was connected. Back in March 1982, Choi was a Busan customs officer who, along with colleagues, was already taking bribes and pilfering goods. After discovering 10 kilograms of hiropon (crystal meth) in a warehouse one night, he and colleague Mr. Jang (Kim Jong-soo) approach a friend of Jang's, gangster Choi Hyung-bae (Ha Jung-woo), to sell it to Japan's yakuza, with whom Hyung-bae has ties. Ik-hyun discovers that the younger Hyung-bae is also a member of the same Choi family clan from Gyeongju and the two form a close relationship. Ik-hyun leaves his customs job and becomes a full-time businessman, with Hyung-bae taking care of the underworld side and Ik-hyun protecting him with his high-level contacts. In the mid-'80s the two forcibly take over a nightclub run by Miss Yeo (Kim Hye-eun) that is on the turf of Pan-ho. Following his humiliation, Pan-ho has the club raided by the police and Hyung-bae arrested, though Ik-hyun gets Hyung-bae released by using the Choi clan connection with Seoul public prosecutor Choi Joo-dong (Kim Eung-soo). In May 1987, Ik-hyun and Hyung-bae take their business to the next level, formally linking up with Japan's yakuza and having a connection with a hotel-casino, the Daedong, that is also on Pan-ho's turf. Pan-ho threatens a gang war with Hyung-bae, and Ik-hyun is forced to decide where his loyalties and self-survival lie.

Confined with no human contact or explanation for his kidnapping and frequently gassed with a possibly mind altering drug, Dae-su soon learns through news reports his wife has been murdered, and he is the prime suspect. Dae-su passes the time shadowboxing, planning revenge, and secretly attempting to tunnel out of his cell.
