Claire Duhamel fait ses débuts en 1948 dans Le Droit de l'enfant aux côtés de Jean Chevrier. Elle est la partenaire de Pierre Fresnay dans Un grand patron d'Yves Ciampi. Le cinéaste Alain Resnais l'engage pour ses films La Guerre est finie et Je t'aime, je t'aime. Son apparition la plus populaire est son interprétation de Madame Darbon, la mère de Christine (Claude Jade), dans les films de François Truffaut, Baisers volés et Domicile conjugal. De retour d'un voyage en Turquie, un fils passe quelques jours à Paris chez sa mère, critique littéraire quelque peu excentrique, vivant cloîtrée au milieu de ses livres et de ses névroses. There are many continuations from The 400 Blows; discharged from the army as unfit, Antoine Doinel seeks out his sweetheart, violinist Christine Darbon. He has written to her voluminously (but, she says, not always nicely) while in the military. Their relationship is tentative and unresolved. Christine is away skiing with friends when Antoine arrives, and her parents must entertain him themselves, though glad to see him. After she learns that Antoine has returned from military service, Christine goes to greet him at his new job as a hotel night clerk. It is a promising sign that perhaps this time, the romance will turn out happily for Antoine. He is, however, quickly fired from the hotel job. Counting the army, Antoine loses three jobs in the film, and is clearly destined to lose a fourth, all symbolic of his general difficulty with finding his identity and "fitting in".

Claude Ridder (Claude Rich) is leaving hospital after a failed attempt at suicide, when he is asked to participate in a mysterious experiment in time travel by a private research body. They have succeeded in sending mice back unharmed for periods of one minute, but need to send a human back to confirm the subject did actually revisit the past. Claude agrees, but instead of returning promptly as the mice had done, he re-experiences many episodes from his past in a highly disjointed and fragmented manner, in interludes of seconds or minutes.

In the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the communist veteran Diego (Yves Montand) has dedicated his life to continuing the struggle against the Franco regime while living in exile in Paris. Lately, however, he has become war-weary and skeptical about the tactics of the revolutionary underground. After meeting Nadine (Geneviève Bujold), whose father's passport he is using, he learns that she is involved with an alternative revolutionary group that is planning an armed attack in Spain. When he meets the young revolutionaries who will execute the plan, he tries to persuade them to abandon the action as misconceived, but they ignore him. The leaders of the underground, meanwhile, send Diego on a mission to Barcelona along with a new recruit, perhaps as a way of getting rid of him; the police have since discovered his identity. His lover Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), who has received a warning from Nadine, attempts to intercept him before he is arrested.

At the time of the occupation of France, the destiny joins together the poacher Fortunat, honest guy somewhat related to drink and Juliette, elegant woman accompanied by her two children: Pierre and Maurice. A scene of film implies clearly that they have a sexual relationship at least once. But the release occurs and Juliette finds her husband. Fortunat sets out again then towards its destiny of solitary man.

Louise (Danielle Darrieux) is an aristocratic woman of Belle Époque Paris, married to André (Charles Boyer), both a count and a high-ranking French army general. Louise is a beautiful, but spoiled and superficial, woman who has amassed debts due to her lifestyle. She arranges to secretly sell her costly heart-shaped diamond earrings, a wedding present from her husband, to the original jeweler, Mr Rémy (Jean Debucourt). Relations between Louise and André are companionable, but they sleep in separate beds, have no children, and André has a secret mistress, of whom he has recently tired. Louise disguises the disappearance of the earrings by pretending to have lost them at the opera. The search for them eventually reaches the newspapers ("Theft at the Theatre") which in turn prompts Rémy to go to André and "discreetly" offer to sell them back. He accepts cheerfully and, rather than confront his wife, coolly gifts the earrings to his mistress, Lola (Lia Di Leo) whom he happens to be seeing off permanently to Constantinople.
