Claire Whitney (May 6, 1890 – August 27, 1969) was an American stage and film actress. She appeared in 111 films between 1912 and 1949. She made her first film in 1913 for Solax and continued making films until 1921, mainly for Fox Film Corporation. Whitney came back to films in 1926 with a role in The Great Gatsby which would be her final silent film. She continued working in film between 1931 and 1949 when she retired.

Whitney died in Los Angeles on August 27, 1969 at the age of 79. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, next to her husband, Robert Emmett Keane.

Joe Brady and Clarence Doolittle are Navy sailors who have a four-day leave in Hollywood. Joe has his heart set on spending time with his girl, the unseen Lola. Clarence, the shy choir boy turned sailor, asks Joe to teach him how to get girls. Donald, a little boy who wants to join the navy, is found wandering around the boulevard by a cop, who takes him to the police station. Clarence and Joe end up being picked up by the cops to help convince Donald to go home. After the two sailors wait at home and entertain Donald, Donald's Aunt Susie arrives. Clarence is smitten with her from the beginning. Susan goes on to tell them that she has been trying to find work in music, and longs to perform with José Iturbi. Trying to make Susan impressed with Clarence, Joe tells her that Clarence is a personal friend of Iturbi, and that he has arranged an audition for Susan with him. That night, they go out to a cafe, where Clarence meets a girl from Brooklyn, and they hit it off. The next day, Joe visits Donald's school, and tells the kids the story of how he got his medal, and how he brought happiness to a lonesome king (played by Jerry Mouse of Tom and Jerry), and joy to the forest animals of the kingdom.

Jo Jones (Ginger Rogers) works in an airplane factory and longs for the day when she will see her husband (Robert Ryan) again. The couple have a heart wrenching farewell at the train station before he leaves for overseas duty in the war. With their husbands off fighting in World War II, Jo and her co-workers struggle to pay living expenses. Unable to meet their rent, they decide to move in together and share expenses. The different women's personalities clash, especially when tensions rise over their German immigrant housekeeper Manya (Mady Christians). Jo discovers she is pregnant and ends up having a son who she names Chris after his father. The women are overjoyed when Doris' (Kim Hunter) husband comes home, but the same day Jo receives a telegram informing her that her husband has been killed. In the 1890s, Lawrence Stevens (Dick Powell) is an obituary writer unhappy in his job who is given, by a ghostly deceased newspaper man named Pop Benson (John Philliber), a newspaper that has tomorrow's news. He uses the paper to write stories and get the scoop on other reporters, but this also brings him under the suspicion of Police Inspector Mulrooney (Edgar Kennedy), who wants to know how Stevens always seems to know what's going to happen and where, mainly a robbery at a theater's box office during a performance. Stevens and his new girlfriend Sylvia (Linda Darnell) – half of a clairvoyant act with her uncle Oscar Smith (Jack Oakie) – have a number of adventures, until her uncle mistakenly thinks that Stevens has consorted with his niece in her boarding house room. The uncle attempts to intimidate Stevens into marrying her, not knowing that Stevens has come to him to ask for her hand.
