Philippe Abrams is the manager of the postal service (La Poste) in Salon-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. As this favourable position will be granted to somebody who is disabled, Abrams decides to pretend that he is. However, the management finds out. As punishment, he is banished for two years to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France. Northern France – and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in particular – is considered "the sticks" – a cold and rainy place inhabited by unsophisticated ch'tis who speak a strange language (called "ch'ti" in local parlance, and "cheutimi" in the South). He has to spend his first night at Antoine's place, a co-worker of his. Philippe initially dislikes Antoine for his rude behaviour and because he thinks Antoine is gay (he found photographs of Antoine dressed as a woman, but they were taken during a carnival party). However, later in the film, Antoine and Philippe become best friends.

In the mountainous wilds of British Columbia circa 1885, a young bear cub suffers the accidental death of his mother from a rockslide. Forced to fend for himself, the cub struggles to find food and shelter. Elsewhere in the mountains, a large male grizzly is pursued by two trophy hunters (Jack Wallace and Tcheky Karyo). Although the younger hunter attempts to kill the bear, his shot fails to take the animal down, and the wounded bear flees. Coming across the grizzly a short time later, the cub attempts to befriend him. Uninterested in the cub and distracted by his wound, the adult bear warns the young orphan away with a growl. The cub approaches again, however, and manages to soothingly lick the other bear's wound. A friendship forms between the two bears, and the grizzly takes the orphan under his wing, teaching him to fish and hunt. At night, the cub suffers from nightmares, reliving the tragic death of his mother.

Son oncle, César Soubeyran, dit « le Papet », est un vieux célibataire prêt à tout pour que son neveu réussisse et se marie, afin que se transmette son nom, dont Ugolin est l'unique héritier. As she and Claude are about to break up, she starts reminiscing about her past relationships. One night she invites her ex-lovers for dinner: Simon, an irascible singer who involves her in his artistic endeavors and with whom she constantly fights; Patrick, a young saxophone player who naively conquers her heart with his doe-eyed glance while accompanying one of Simon's songs; Julien, a tame and shy man who falls for Alice while helping her push her stalled car to a roadside during a thunderstorm. A rather strange journey through her past begins, a journey made of laughs, bitter memories and, ultimately, the confirmation of why she and they are no longer together.
