In Nazi occupied France, Jean Blomart sits by a bed in which his lover Hélène lies dying. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn about both characters and their relationship to each other. As a young man filled with guilt about his privileged middle-class life, Jean joins the Communist Party and breaks from his family, determined to make his own way in life. After the death of a friend in a political protest, for which he feels guilty, Jean quits the Party and concentrates on trade union activities. Hélène is a young designer who works in her family's confectionary shop and is dissatisfied with her conventional romance with her fiance Paul. She contrives to meet Jean, and although he initially rejects her, they form a relationship after she has an abortion following a reckless liaison with another man. Jean tells Hélène he loves her even though he believes he does not. He proposes to her and she accepts.

In France during the German occupation, a young German naval officer is killed in Paris by a group of leftist activists. The compliant Vichy government seeks to appease the Germans by locating the perpetrators and agreeing to the execution of six people, and a special section is set up for this purpose. The section consists of judges who are too ambitious, cowardly or inhuman to refuse such work. The flames of totalitarianism must be stoked, even with innocent blood, and it is especially convenient to the government if the accused are thoroughly expendable in their eyes.

À la veille de la bataille de Marengo, Talleyrand, Fouché, Sieyès et leur bras armé Corentin complotent contre Napoléon Bonaparte dont ils prévoient la défaite. Dans le même temps, les familles Simeuses, Hauteserre et leur cousine Laurence de Cinq-Cygne, alliées aux ultra-royalistes, projettent d'envahir la France avec les armées étrangères. Corentin et son acolyte Peyrade, qui ont fait enlever à Arcis-sur-Aube un sénateur, ont également l'ordre d'arrêter les royalistes et de brûler des papiers compromettants. Ils réussissent en effet à arrêter les Simeuses et les Hauteserre qui vont être condamnés. Laurence de Cinq-Cygne va elle-même trouver le futur empereur sur le champ de bataille à la veille de la bataille d'Iéna pour demander la grâce des condamnés. Napoléon refuse, mais par la suite, il engagera les Simeuses et les Hauteserre, gagnés à sa cause, dans ses armées. L'empereur revient victorieux de Marengo, le complot de Fouché a échoué.

The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

In Mid-17th century France: young Louis XIV is struggling for his throne, beggars and thieves haunt Paris and brigands roam the countryside.
