Biography
Smith married English film director Bryan Forbes in 1951; they divorced in 1955. In 1962 she was sentenced to three months in prison for stabbing her boyfriend, the documentary maker and film historian Paul Rotha. On 4 February 1968, she stabbed Rotha for the second time and was charged with attempted murder. She and Rotha married in 1974. She also tried several times again to kill herself. Her last decades were spent, dissipated, in and out of hospitals. When able to get herself together for brief periods, she worked as a cleaner.Usually with

Alan Curtis (Kennedy), an American real estate agent living in England is dissatisfied with what he believes to be his humdrum life. One weekend while his wife Elizabeth (Shelton) is on a lengthy vacation visiting her mother, he gives a ride to sultry nightclubsinger Lila (Smith) when he finds her stranded on the road. When Curtis gets romantically involved with her Lila tells him that her brother has gotten in trouble over a jewel robbery. In truth, Lila desperately wants the stones for herself. She tricks the wayward Curtis into believing that he killed a man after he buys them two tickets out of the country. He then decides that it is better to face the music, and opts to stay and confess. Lila, too reconsiders, and decides to stay with him until his name is cleared. After the true killers are revealed Lila goes to jail as a participant in the robbery and Curtis returns to his wife, who forgives him.

Cliff Mason, a veteran foreman of the Forest Service's smokejumper unit, is called out with a crew on a fire, despite the fact that they have not rested in three days. Accompanied by R. A. "Pop" Miller and four other men, Cliff leaves the smokejumper base at Missoula, Montana to parachute into a nearly inaccessible area of Bugle Peak. Hours later, at base, superintendent Richard "Dick" Dryer becomes worried because Cliff is not answering radio calls. The next day, after the fire crowns, Dick flies by helicopter into the area and is stunned to find only Cliff, in shock and wandering through the devastated region.
