Therpauve Judith, who was "Queen" in the days of the Resistance is asked by his former friends, as she co-owners of the regional newspaper "The Free Republic" to take charge of the daily, is wrong. She quickly realizes that the poor financial health of the newspaper is orchestrated by a businessman who wants to buy it back at a low price. Judith manages to drive up sales, but unfair maneuvers succeed and forced to sell. Little support from his staff, feeling useless and alone, she commits suicide.

Charles Masson (Bouquet), an advertising executive, is having an affair with Laura (Douking), the wife of his best friend, world-renowned architect François Tellier (Périer). Their sex life consists of sadomasochistic behavior, and in one of their heated sessions, Charles accidentally strangles Laura. Completely confused, Charles leaves the borrowed apartment in Paris and runs into François at a nearby bistro. Germaine, une femme de ménage, a trois clients : M. Hélène Régnier's (Audran) mentally ill husband Charles (Drouot) injures their son Michel in a violent rage. Charles is then forced to move back in with his wealthy and manipulative parents, who use Hélène as a scapegoat for their son's mental state and decide to take over custody of Michel by any means necessary. While the boy is recovering in a local hospital, Hélène moves to a boarding house nearby. The Régniers hire Paul Thomas (Cassel), an impoverished family acquaintance, to find out something about Hélène which would help them in their custody battle. Paul moves into the boarding house and, with the help of his girlfriend Sonia (Rouvel), plots to ruin Hélène's reputation and then possibly kill her.

In 1944, art masterpieces stolen by the Wehrmacht from French museums are being shipped to Germany; the officer in charge of the operation, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is an ardent art lover and is determined to take the art to Germany, no matter the cost. After the Germans remove the art chosen by Waldheim from the Jeu de Paume Museum, curator Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon) seeks help from the French Resistance. Gina est l'infirmière dévouée de Paul Dupré, riche industriel soigné pour des problèmes cardiaques. Dupré meurt brutalement lors d'une injection faite par Gina et, aussitôt, son épouse Catherine accuse Gina avec l'aide du célèbre avocat Charles Cassidi qui est aussi son amant depuis peu. Gina se trouve défendue par un avocat débutant, Me Philliet. L'enquête est menée par le juge d'instruction Albert Gaudet. Très vite Gaudet trouve que trop de coïncidences ou d'incohérences accablent Gina, que la connivence et la liaison avérée entre Catherine Dupré et Cassidi sont troublantes, d'autant que Cassidi a écrit X articles sur le crime parfait. Mais quand Gaudet croit avoir trouvé le témoin nécessaire pour confondre Catherine Dupré, celui-ci perd ses moyens face à Cassidi qui sait pourtant que Catherine Dupré est coupable.
