Daniel Mann, also known as Daniel Chugerman (August 8, 1912 – November 21, 1991), was an American film and television director.
Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Helen and Samuel Chugerman, a lawyer. He was a stage actor since childhood, and attended Erasmus Hall High School, New York's Professional Children's School and the Neighborhood Playhouse. He entered films in 1952 as a director, and is known for his excellent ear for dialogue. Most of Mann's films were adaptations from the stage (Come Back Little Sheba, The Rose Tattoo, The Teahouse of the August Moon) and literature (BUtterfield 8, The Last Angry Man).
Mann died of heart failure in Los Angeles, California in November 1991. He had three children with his wife, actress Mary Kathleen Williams, who was from Oklahoma; their daughter, Erica Mann, is married to director Harold Ramis.

As Judy Danner (Dunne) is about to marry her college sweetheart Danny Reanolds (Canning), she starts to question if marrying the man she loves is the right decision, considering how her parents, psychologist Aaron (Weaver) and Norma (Harper), have divorced bitterly. The film is told mostly in flashbacks, as Judy and her younger sister Debbie (Sheedy) reflect their parents' marriage. As children, Judy (Noel) and Debbie (Glick) are very happy, living with their parents under the same roof. Norma, however, is unhappy with her marriage. She constantly gets upset with Aaron and suspects that he might have an affair with one of his patients due to his recurring late night visits to them. Despite the children's protests, they decide to divorce each other.

Fénelon, a Jewish singer-pianist, is sent with other prisoners to the Auschwitz concentration camp in a crowded train during World War II. After having their belongings and clothes taken and their heads shaved, the prisoners are processed and enter the camp. The film chronicles Twyman's and Stokes's relationship from Stokes's rookie year in the NBA up until his death. Stokes and Twyman were teammates on the Rochester Royals during the 1950s (during which time the team located to Cincinnati). Stokes fell ill three days after the last game of the 1957-58 NBA season, in Minneapolis. Stokes drove to the basket, drew contact and fell to the floor, hit his head, and was knocked unconscious. He was revived with smelling salts, and he returned to the game.

Willard is a meek social misfit who later develops a strange affinity for rats. He lives in a large Victorian home, with only his cranky and decrepit mother for company. On his 27th birthday, he is humiliated to come home to a birthday party thrown by his mother, where all of the attendees are her own aging friends. After having left the party in embarrassment, he notices a rat in his backyard and tosses it pieces of his birthday cake. Later, his mother gets upset with him for leaving the party and she scolds him later while also discussing how badly the house is falling apart. The next morning he goes out and feeds another rat (this one has babies with it) while imitating their squeaks. His mother starts telling him that he needs to kill the rats that have been running around their yard, which Willard refuses to do.
