Moretti is a director in crisis and would like to make a musical film that speaks to the history of a pastry in the Cold War. However, each time he starts to develop the project, Moretti leaves the Institute to devote himself to meditation. In fact there is something in the Italy of his day that afflicts him: the demonic presence in Italy of Silvio Berlusconi and his corrupt colleagues (including Emilio Fede in the TV news) in the government. Moretti, a Communist Party, would like a jolt did topple the government of Berlusconi, but to no avail. After a few days he really wants to make a movie about all the misdeeds of the Prime Minister, but his plans are thwarted by the birth of his child, to whom he devotes himself with an obsessive love. Not knowing what to do, as he seriously risking to fail as a film director, Moretti takes up the idea of the film on the pastry singer.

In a grammar school in the outskirts of Rome comes on the last day of school before the summer holidays. Professor Vivaldi, Italian literature teacher, before the end bitterly remembers what happened in that year and he wonders him what will happen to those young students that he cared for as a children from their first day of school. Claudio (Elio Germano) is a young construction worker who lives a happy life with his pregnant wife Elena (Isabella Ragonese) and their two children in Rome. They manage together their daily difficulties with love and complicity. One day in the construction site, Claudio discovered the corpse of an illegal Romanian worker who died while working in a drunk state, but decided not to report the discovery for fear that the site would be closed down. His life is further struck when Elena dies while giving birth to their third son Vasco, right after their vacation. This is the beginning of a new phase for Claudio, who now concentrates on becoming richer, and buying "things" to his three sons in the hope of making them happier after the loss of their mum. Accio (Elio Germano) and Manrico (Riccardo Scamarcio) are working class brothers who live in Italy in the 1960s. While his brother becomes drawn into left-wing politics, Accio, the hotheaded younger brother, is taken under the wing of a market trader and while under his influence, joins the Fascist party.
