In 1979 he was the producer of Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (the first theatrical live comedy concert), and Dragnet (1987), an early example of remaking a television series into a motion picture. He is owner and president of Permut Presentations, Inc. of Los Angeles, California. Since 1999 he has maintained a second home in Palm Springs, California.

The movie revolves around Toby, a middle-aged ex-dancer now working as a ballet instructor at Juilliard. He is asked for an interview by husband and wife Mike and Lisa, who claim they are preparing a dissertation on the dance community of the 1960s. Through the course of the interview, Mike's questions keep getting more and more personal, until it is revealed that Mike suspects Toby of being his biological father, as indicated by Mike's mother on her deathbed. When Toby denies this, Mike forcefully takes a DNA sample from Toby and rushes to the police lab where his friend Jim performs a DNA test.

Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver) is a devout Christian who raises her children according to the evangelical teachings of her local Presbyterian church in the late 1970s and early 1980s in Walnut Creek, California. Her son Bobby (Ryan Kelley) confides to his older brother that he may be gay. Life changes for the entire family after Mary learns about his secret. Samuel L. Jackson narrates the story about a group of male penguins that make a 70-mile trek to go to their breeding grounds where females are waiting to have sex with them.
