Dean Jeffries Jagger (November 7, 1903 – February 5, 1991) was an American film, stage and television actor who received an Academy Award for his role in Henry King's Twelve O'Clock High (1949).

Biography

Ira Dean Jagger naît à Columbus Grove en Ohio. Il fait ses débuts au cinéma dans The Woman from Hell (1929) avec Mary Astor. Il devient un acteur à succès, sans devenir une grande star et apparaît dans près de cent films dans une carrière qui se prolonge jusque peu de temps avant sa mort.


Vie personnelle
Il abandonne l'école à plusieurs reprises avant d'entrer finalement au Wabash College. Dans cette université, il est membre de la fraternité Lambda Chi Alpha et joue au football. Dans sa deuxième année, il arrête ses études, se rendant compte que l'université ne lui convenait pas. Durant quelques semestres, il travaille comme enseignant dans une école élémentaire, avant d'intégrer le Conservatoire des Arts de Chicago (Art Lyceum Conservatoire). Avant de tourner son premier film en 1929, Jagger travailla à la radio.

Jagger a été baptisé comme membre de l'Église de Jésus-Christ des saints des derniers jours en 1972.

Il meurt d'une maladie cardiaque à Santa Monica, Californie.

Harmon gives him an address and instructs Patterson to go there to receive an assignment from the society; Patterson has been selected to prevent Dr. Konstantin Horvathy (Eduard Franz) from accepting a deanship at a college of linguistics. The Brotherhood wants this post for one of their own. Patterson is given dossiers of people who helped Horvathy defect to the United States, and he is to threaten to reveal these to the government of Horvathy's homeland if Horvathy accepts the new post. Against Brotherhood policy, Patterson consults Harmon about the legality and ethics of his assignment. Harmon tells Patterson to do it and be grateful that more is not asked of him.

A woman and two children are kidnapped by Apaches. The husband Lorne Warfield (Glenn Ford), enlists the help of his neighbor Owen Forbes (Arthur Kennedy) to find his captured family. Warfield is a former gunman trying to forget his violent past. Forbes, a decent and humane rancher, is also in love with Warfield's wife and feels guilty that he let her be captured without trying to help. An Indian trader (Dean Jagger) aids them in their quest. Along the way they are encounter Mexican bandits, Apache warriors, renegade soldiers, and a town blighted by cholera. While Warfield in his cynicism immediately recognizes malevolent motives, each encounter results in further stripping Forbes of his humanity and making him accustomed to killing. The search eventually leads them to the Apache camp where they rescue the woman and children. Safely back home, Forbes challenges Warfield (who is now unarmed, trading his gun to a storekeeper for clothing for his family) to a duel, but he refuses. Forbes shoots Warfield in the back, wounding him. Before he can finish him off, he is shot and killed by the storekeeper using Warfield's gun.
