Debra Lawrance (born 1 January 1957) is an Australian actress best known for her role as Pippa Ross on Home and Away, which she played from 1990 to 1998. She continues to guest star to this date- her last appearance was in 2009.

Biography

Debra Lawrance was born in Melbourne, Victoria and was the second youngest out of six children. She chose, in 1974, to study acting at NIDA and was accepted. She studied with fellow students, including Mel Gibson, Steve Bisley, Judy Davis and Robert Menzies. Lawrance graduated in 1977.

The film begins with an interrogation in an immigration office, revealing an illegal immigrant working as a prostitute on the verge of being deported. Throughout the film it becomes apparent that one of the interrogators (Damien Richardson) has in fact had sex with the girl at an illegal brothel, negating his encouragement to her to tell the truth.

Seventh-day Adventist Church pastor Michael Chamberlain (Sam Neill), his wife Lindy (Meryl Streep), their two sons, and their nine-week-old daughter Azaria are on a camping holiday trip in the Outback. With the baby sleeping in their tent, the family is enjoying a barbecue with their fellow campers when a cry is heard. Lindy returns to the tent to check on Azaria and is certain she sees a dingo with something in its mouth running off as she approaches. When she discovers the infant is missing, everyone joins forces to search for her, without success. It is assumed what Lindy saw was the animal carrying off the child, and a subsequent inquest rules her account of events is true.

The small town of Minyaka (aboriginal word for 'tomorrow') is run by greedy councillors who ignore the needs of the children; having promised them a swimming pool, children’s library and playground but for months the town has been suffering from a great drought. Based on Alan Marshall's three-part autobiography I Can Jump Puddles (1955), This is the Grass (1962) and In Mine Own Heart (1963), the film tells of Marshall's childhood growing up in rural Victoria during the turn of the century. Contracting polio soon after attending school, the story retells the obstacles he faced as a child in trying to overcome his disability. As an adult, he later encounters prejudice from his debilitating disease while looking for work in Melbourne.
