The film begins in June 1941. Five years have passed since the lives and destinies of Colonel Sergei Petrovich Kotov, his wife Maroussia, their daughter Nadia, as well as those of Mitya and the Sverbitski family, were irrevocably changed: it has meant five years of incarceration for General Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov), the former Revolutionary hero betrayed by Stalin. Natalia, jeune femme de 35 ans, vit avec un mari plus âgé qu'elle et qui l'a achetée dans un orphelinat alors qu'elle avait 16 ans. Leur maison est une gare désaffectée, en piteux état, située près d'un lac et d'une forêt. Le mari meurt brutalement. Elle lui organise des funérailles décentes, mais n'éprouve aucun chagrin. Elle reste seule, éloignée du monde, en compagnie de sa vache qu'elle échange contre une chèvre et un chien. Ses journées sont rythmées par le passage des trains qui parfois s'arrêtent. Serguei, un homme des environs, divorcé et père d'une petite fille, lui rend visite. Elle accepte de passer une nuit avec lui, y prend du plaisir, mais le met violemment à la porte le lendemain. Il revient pourtant, à la fois intrigué et attiré par son comportement inhabituel. Elle le reçoit parfois... pas toujours. Sa métamorphose est spectaculaire. Poussée par une force de vie, indifférente aux préjugés et habitudes qu'elle ne connait pas, elle expérimente une toute nouvelle liberté.

During World War II, the sailor Anatoly and his captain, Tikhon, are captured by the Nazis when they board their barge and tugboat which is carrying a shipment of coal. The Nazi officer leading the raid offers Anatoly the choice to shoot Tikhon and stay alive which Anatoly reluctantly takes, and Tikhon falls overboard. The Nazis blow up the ship but Anatoly is found by Russian Orthodox monks on the shore the next morning. He survives and becomes a stoker at the monastery but is perpetually overcome with guilt.
