Pavle, who is a poor cart-driver has two girls, Maro and Tamro. The girls have a dream to take classes at a ballet school, but Pavle cannot afford such a luxury. Vardo, a laundress, decides to help the little girls. For that purpose she steals a cattle, firewood and a mink coat from a rich merchant's house. She warms up Pavle’s house with the stolen firewood and pays tutorship for the girls' ballet classes. Vardo gets caught for larceny. All the laundresses in the neighborhood go on strike in Vardo’s support. Scared chief of local police sets Vardo free and enlists the girls in the ballet school.

Fin du XIX siècle. Après avoir distribué ses maigres biens aux miséreux, le peintre naïf géorgien Niko Pirosmanichvili (1862-1918) erre dans les rues de Tiflis (Tbilissi), troquant son talent pour le prix d'un repas. Ses tableaux sont remarqués par deux artistes de passage qui organisent une exposition de ses œuvres. Mais la critique officielle les boude ou les raille. Seuls de très rares connaisseurs auront détecté son génie. Pirosmani meurt dans le dénuement et fort incompris.

Diplômé de l'École des Beaux-Arts, le jeune sculpteur Aguli Eristavi reçoit de son professeur un grand marbre de Paros. Il émet le vœu d'en faire plus tard une création extraordinaire. Survient la Guerre... Aguli en ressort bouleversé. Il épouse alors Glafira, une jeune Russe. Pour assurer leur subsistance et celle de leurs enfants, il sculpte des pierres tombales pour de riches clients. Le grand marbre blanc demeure, quant à lui, intact. Peu à peu, pourtant, les travaux d'Aguli s'accumulent, transformant le cimetière de la cité en Exposition extraordinaire. Aguli lègue à son élève Zauri le marbre de Paros dans l'espoir que celui-ci accomplira le vœu qu'il n'a pu réaliser.
