Dix ans plus tard, son film White of the Eye (1987) débute comme un giallo et se termine en survival. Il raconte l'histoire d'un père de famille Paul White, installateur de systèmes de son, accusé de crimes sanglants perpétrés contre des femmes. Ce long-métrage est célèbre pour son premier meurtre graphique, dont le témoin oculaire n'est autre qu'un poisson rouge. Nick Mason, le batteur de Pink Floyd a composé la bande originale du film dans laquelle se retrouvent également des airs d'opéra et le tube d'Hot Chocolate You Sexy Thing.
Ce film est en réalité une autobiographie déguisée de Donald Cammell, qui est rongé par la dépression (problèmes familiaux). Biography
Né à Édimbourg, il est le fils du poète Charles Richard Cammell, qui a entre autres écrit une biographie d'Aleister Crowley, le célèbre occultiste. Aleister Crowley a d'ailleurs rencontré le jeune Donald à plusieurs occasions. Donald Cammell commence sa carrière dans la peinture, art pour lequel il montre quelques traits de génie. Portraitiste du swinging London (la Chelsea set), les portes du cinéma s'ouvrent alors à lui. Son premier film Performance (1968) est coréalisé avec Nicolas Roeg. Il raconte les déboires d'un gangster joué par James Fox qui rencontre le quotidien d'une rock star excentrique interprétée par Mick Jagger. De nature très sensible, se remarque très tôt un goût prononcé de Cammell pour les personnages excentriques qui se révèlent paradoxalement fragiles. Two friends, Daniel and Adrien, are invited to vacation at a mutual friend's house by the sea in Saint-Tropez while Rodolphe is away. When they arrive they discover another friend of Rodolphe's is also staying there, a very young woman named Haydée who turns up, often very late at night, with a different lover each time they see her. The solitary vacation each of the friends had envisioned for themselves is dashed on the rocks of Haydée whom they first resist but then can't resist and it's not clear who is really in control of this game of "collecting" relationships.

A series of murders of rich young women throughout Arizona bears distinctive signatures of a serial killer. Clues lead Detective Charles Mendoza to visit Paul White, a sound expert installing hi-fi systems in wealthy people's homes. His special talent is to make a noise which echoes through the air cavities in his head and shows him where the sound of the speakers should come from and echo in the room. He is married to Joan, whom, ten years earlier, he had seduced away from Mike DeSantos, who was her current boyfriend. Joan is questioned by Mendoza, but does not believe his insinuations that her husband is somehow involved in the murders.

Chas (James Fox) is a member of an East London gang led by Harry Flowers (Johnny Shannon); his speciality is intimidation through violence as he collects pay-offs for Flowers. He is very good at his job, and has a reputation for liking it. His sexual liaisons are casual and rough. When Flowers decides to take over a betting shop, owned by Joey Maddocks (Anthony Valentine), he forbids Chas to get involved, as he feels Chas's complicated personal history with Maddocks (which is at least partly gay) may lead to trouble. Chas is angry about this and later humiliates Maddocks, who retaliates by wrecking Chas's apartment and attacking Chas. Chas shoots him, packs a suitcase and runs from the scene.

The film open in Texas, where Neil Gallagher (Ken Marshall) challenges obese pinball champion Harold Remmens (Durning), appropriately nicknamed "The Whale," to a $400 match. When Neil gets caught cheating, he heads off to California, where he meets teen runaway Brenda "Tilt" Davenport (Shields), a 14-year-old pinball wizard. Neil watches as Tilt and the owner of Mickey's Bar hustle an unaware gambler in a game of pinball, and immediately decides to team up with her. He tells her that he is a hopeful country and western star and needs to raise money to make a demo tape of his songs. After hearing Neil's musical talent, she's impressed and agrees to help by traveling with him, raising cash with her pinball skills. When the two eventually end up back in his hometown, Neil sets up a $3500 game between Tilt and the Whale. However, he doesn't realize that Tilt has caught on to his lies and manipulation, and his big plans may not go as he hoped.
