Dorothy Tree (May 21, 1906 – February 13, 1992) was an American actress, voice teacher and writer. She appeared in a wide range of character roles in at least 49 films between 1927 and 1951.

Her roles included Martha, mother of Knute Rockne in Knute Rockne, All American, and May Emmerich, the invalid wife of Louis Calhern in The Asphalt Jungle. After being blacklisted as a communist because of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings, she began a second career as a voice teacher in New York. Emphasizing good diction and clarity, and the subtleties of intonation, she published four books on the subject.

Biography

Sous le pseudonyme de Dorothy Tree, elle débute au théâtre à Broadway en 1927, jouant sur les planches new-yorkaises dans six pièces, la dernière en 1936.

Au cinéma, elle participe à quarante-huit films américains, le premier en 1927 (son unique muet), les suivants de 1931 à 1951. Un de ses rôles les mieux connus est celui de l'épouse de Louis Calhern (Emmerich) dans Quand la ville dort de John Huston, sorti en 1950.

Elle apparaît brièvement à la télévision, dans une série dévolue au théâtre (The Silver Theatre, un épisode, diffusé en 1950).

En 1952, elle et son mari Michael Uris (1902-1967) — scénariste et éditeur — sont victimes du maccarthysme, l'actrice étant alors mise sur la liste noire des artistes à Hollywood. Sous son nom d'épouse de Dorothy Uris, elle commence une nouvelle carrière de pédagogue et enseigne la diction à New York (où le couple s'est installé), en particulier dans le domaine du chant (elle collabore notamment avec le Metropolitan Opera). Entre 1960 et 1979, elle publie quatre livres sur ce sujet (voir la bibliographie ci-dessous).

Ken is a young infantry lieutenant who leads his platoon through an embattled European town, and advances into an open square and a shot rings out. He is hit in the lower back and in an instant a robust young man is made paraplegic for the rest of his life. In the hospital, Ken is a sullen and resentful patient, and in feeling sorry for himself he finds no sympathy from his fellow paraplegics, including Norm, a bitter and caustic man, and Leo, a happy go lucky patient who smokes cigars and bets on horses. Ken's reluctance to respond to treatment begins to diminish through the persistence of his fiancée, Ellen, who refuses to give up, despite his wish that she do so. With the support too, of Brock, a sympathetic doctor, Ken begins to tackle the program of adjustment. He decides to go through with the wedding, determined to take the vows standing up at the altar. The wedding night however is painful for him and he returns to the hospital. Later, he is involved in a drunk driving accident and is disciplined by his fellow patients. Eventually Ken comes to appreciate that he has responsibilities, especially to his wife, who is also faced with the problems of being married to a paraplegic, a course she has accepted with full knowledge and considerable courage.
