Douglas Geoffrey McGrath (born February 2, 1958) is an American screenwriter, film director, and actor. He also writes political commentary, such as "The Flapjack File", a column for The New Republic.

McGrath was nominated for both an Academy Award and a BAFTA award for his Bullets over Broadway screenplay. He was twice nominated for a Writers Guild of America award, in 1995 for Bullets over Broadway, and in 1997 for Emma.

A son of Beatrice and R. Searle McGrath, an independent oil producer from Midland, Texas. He is an alumnus of Trinity School of Midland, The Choate School, and Princeton University. At Princeton, he was a member of the Princeton Triangle Club and joined its Board of Directors after graduation. In 1995, McGrath married Jane Read Martin, a former assistant of Woody Allen's. She and McGrath have a son named Henry.

Fils d'un producteur texan de pétrole, il fait ses études supérieures à l'université Princeton, où il fait partie de la troupe théâtrale du Princeton Triangle Club .


Carrière
Il signe des textes pour l'émission humoristique Saturday Night Live pendant la saison 1980-1981.

Comme acteur, il apparaît en 1994 dans le petit rôle de Snodgrass du film Quiz Show, réalisé par Robert Redford.

En 1995, il est nommé pour l'Oscar du meilleur scénario original pour Coups de feu sur Broadway (Bullets Over Broadway), film co-écrit et réalisé par Woody Allen. C'est avec ce film qu'il est également nommé l'année suivante dans la même catégorie aux BAFTA Awards.

L'association de la Writers Guild of America le nomme également à deux reprises pour le prix du meilleur scénario : d'abord pour Coups de feu sur Broadway en 1995, ensuite pour le film Emma, l'entremetteuse (Emma) en 1997.
