In 1945, as a truckload of war survivors stops in front of an Amsterdam factory at the end of World War II, Otto Frank (Joseph Schildkraut) gets out and walks inside. After climbing the stairs to a deserted garret, Otto finds a girl's discarded glove and sobs, then is joined and comforted by Miep Gies (Dodie Heath) and Mr. Kraler (Douglas Spencer), factory workers who shielded him from the Nazis. After stating that he is now all alone, Otto begins to search for the diary written by his youngest daughter, Anne. Miep promptly retrieves the journal for Otto, and he receives solace reading the words written by his young daughter three years earlier.

Retired gunslinger and former Confederate soldier Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) is living as a rancher in a small western community. He collaborates with the main landowner Dennis Deneen (Donald Crisp), from whom he rents the ranch, to preserve communal stability. His quiet life is disrupted by the appearance of his emotionally unstable younger brother Tony (John Cassavetes) and Tony's beautiful girlfriend Joan (Julie London). 1852. Le capitaine Harper découvre, en arrivant au fort, que le commandant de celui-ci a été tué. Il quitte le fort avec quelques hommes, la jeune Laura Evans, fille du commandant, et Brett Halliday, accusé d’avoir déserté pour rejoindre les indiens Utes. Hallyday tente vainement de se justifier en déclarant à Harper, qui le déteste, que sa volonté était d’empêcher un bain de sang entre les indiens et les soldats. Il conseille à Harper de fuir en barque, ce que l’officier finit par accepter. Le trajet est périlleux, car les Utes sont toujours en train de guetter leurs adversaires. Halliday révèle à plusieurs reprises son courage et Laura comprend qu’il avait bien agi. Ford devient jaloux de Halliday et tente de le tuer mais c’est lui qui fait une chute mortelle.

Dr. Cal Meacham (Reason), a noted scientist and jet pilot, is sent an unusual substitute for electronic condensers that he ordered. Instead, he receives instructions and parts to build a complex communication device called an interocitor.
