Professor Kantorek gives an impassioned speech about the glory of serving in the Army and "saving the Fatherland". Très vite le jeune couple doit faire face à son passé : Dot a perdu sa maman à sa naissance et Eddie vient d'une famille très pauvre. Lorsque Dot se rend compte qu'elle est enceinte elle n'ose le dire à Eddie persuadée qu'il ne désire pas d'enfant car il soutient que les parents sont fous de mettre des enfants au monde.
