Edythe Chapman (October 8, 1863 - October 15, 1948), was an American stage and silent film actress from Rochester, New York. As early as 1898 she appeared in New York, New York in the Charity Ball. Edythe performed at the Shubert Theater in Brooklyn, New York in a production of The Light Eternal in 1907. The play was a romantic drama of early Rome which was supported by a cast of approximately 100 people.

Mrs. Chapman played maternal roles in numerous silent motion pictures and became known in the 1920s as Hollywood's Mother.
She played Ma Jones in the film version of Lightnin' (1925), a screen production which featured Will Rogers. Edythe was Grandmother Janeway in Man Crazy (1927). The film starred Dorothy Mackaill and Jack Mulhall. Chapman was praised by reviewers for her performance.

Miss Chapman came to Hollywood around 1909 with her husband, screen and stage actor, James Neill. The couple met in Cincinnati, Ohio when Miss Chapman was working in Mr. Neill's stock company. They were married in 1897. The two began making movies with Cecil B. Demille and other noteworthy directors and producers. They had leading roles in The Ten Commandments (1923), Manslaughter (1922), The Little American (1917), and other silent motion pictures. Mr. Neill died in 1931.

The final movie in which Edythe appeared was Double Crossroads in 1930. Prior to this, she had a large role in Navy Blues (1929).

Edythe Chapman Neill died in Glendale, California in 1948 after a brief illness and was interred at the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, USA. She was 85 years old.

Biography

Edythe Chapman débute au théâtre en 1892 et rejoint la troupe (qui se produira entre autres à Broadway en décembre 1906) de l'acteur James Neill en 1897, année où elle l'épouse.

Au cinéma, elle apparaît pour la première fois dans Richelieu d'Allan Dwan (avec Murdock MacQuarrie dans le rôle-titre), sorti en 1914. Ce film muet est également le premier aux côtés de son mari, qu'elle retrouvera dans vingt-trois autres films, dont six réalisations de Cecil B. DeMille (comme Le Réquisitoire et Le Détour, tous deux avec Leatrice Joy et sortis en 1922, ou encore Les Dix Commandements, version de 1923, avec Theodore Roberts personnifiant Moïse).

Outre Cecil B. DeMille (huit films en tout) et Allan Dwan (cinq films au total), Edythe Chapman tourne notamment sous la direction de William C. de Mille (frère du premier ; six films, dont The Idle Rich en 1929 — dernier du couple Neill —, avec Conrad Nagel et Bessie Love), William Desmond Taylor (cinq films, dont Tom Sawyer en 1917, avec Jack Pickford dans le rôle-titre), et Sam Wood (quatre films, dont Le Droit d'aimer en 1922, avec Gloria Swanson et Rudolph Valentino).


Au total, l'actrice contribue à cent-vingt films américains, dont seuls les sept derniers sont parlants. Parmi ses quatre ultimes, sortis en 1930, citons Up the River (avec Spencer Tracy et Claire Luce) de John Ford — qu'elle avait déjà croisé en 1925 sur Sa nièce de Paris, avec J. Farrell MacDonald et Otis Harlan —, ainsi que Take the Heir (avec Edward Everett Horton et Dorothy Devore) de Lloyd Ingraham.Edythe Chapman se retire de l'écran peu avant la mort en 1931 de son époux (qui était né en 1860), dont elle reste veuve jusqu'à son propre décès survenu en 1948. Famed playwright Donald Anthony returns home to Magnolia Gap, Virginia, and proposes to Betty Fairfax. She accepts and he offers her the lead part in his next play, but the play is a disaster. We see Mary Magdalene, here portrayed as a wild courtesan, entertain many men around her. Upon learning that Judas is with a carpenter she rides out on her chariot drawn by zebras to get him back. Peter is introduced as the Giant apostle, and we see the future gospel writer Mark as a child who is healed by Jesus. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is shown as a beautiful and saintly woman who is a mother to all her son's followers. Our first sight of Jesus is through the eyesight of a little girl, whom He heals. He is surrounded by a halo. Mary Magdelene arrives afterwards and talks to Judas, who reveals that he is only staying with Jesus in hopes of being made a king after Jesus becomes the king of kings. Jesus casts the Seven Deadly Sins out of Mary Magdalene in a multiple exposure sequence.

Bernice Sumners is sent to a finishing school by her Texas uncle after oil is discovered on his property. At the school she blossoms into a young woman. Bernice is a compulsive liar. One evening she and a friend go to a hotel before a theater date, planning to meet popular Paul Carroll, but they run into the school principal in the hotel lobby.
