Eliseo Subiela se tourne finalement vers la réalisation : il assiste Leonardo Favio sur le tournage de Crónica de un niño solo, participe avec Pino Solanas et Octavio Getino au projet avorté Argentina, mayo del 1969: los caminos de la liberación, et réalise des publicités. C’est un auteur essentiel du cinéma argentin des années 1980 et 1990, réalisant notamment les classiques Homme regardant au sud-est et Le Côté obscur du cœur.
Régulièrement sélectionné et primé dans les festivals de cinéma internationaux (Saint-Sébastien, Berlin, La Havane…), récompensé par de nombreux Condors d’argent ainsi que par la fondation Konex, Eliseo Subiela est nommé Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République française en 1990 et membre honoraire de l’Academia de las artes y las ciencias cinematográficas de España en 1995. En 2005, il obtient une bourse de la fondation Guggenheim.
Eliseo Subiela a eu trois enfants avec Mora Moglia : Guadalupe, Eliseo Ignacio et Santiago.

Biography
Après une enfance triste dans le quartier portègne de Palermo auprès de deux parents malades, Eliseo Subiela étudie l'aviation. Il est membre de la Jeunesse péroniste et des Montoneros.Eliseo Subiela se tourne finalement vers la réalisation : il assiste Leonardo Favio sur le tournage de Crónica de un niño solo, participe avec Pino Solanas et Octavio Getino au projet avorté Argentina, mayo del 1969: los caminos de la liberación, et réalise des publicités. C’est un auteur essentiel du cinéma argentin des années 1980 et 1990, réalisant notamment les classiques Homme regardant au sud-est et Le Côté obscur du cœur.

Shot in digital video, this surreal, metaphysical meditation on existence and identity finds a man (Pasta Dioguardi) and a woman (Flor Sabatella) trapped in an apparent dream taking place in the labyrinthine corridors and strange rooms of a seaside 1930s hotel. The man knows nothing about his past or how he ended up in the hotel, but is accused by two men of having committed a crime at some previous point in his life. Every time he falls asleep, the man is tortured by a recurring nightmare of living in an impoverished apartment with a woman and a baby. Gradually, the man and woman fall in love as they try to figure out what has led to their imprisonment, and together they resort to extreme measures to break out of the dream. The dream takes on even more sinister proportions when the couple realize that one of the hotel's bizarre inhabitants may in fact be dreaming them.

Leopoldo, projectionniste de cinéma à Buenos Aires, a une seule idée en tête : donner vie à ses rêves. The staff and patients go about their daily business at Buenos Aires' José Borda Psychiatric Hospital on a summer day in 1985. A staff psychiatrist, Dr. Julio Denis (Lorenzo Quinteros) is surprised to hear that his ward for non-violent delusional cases has one patient too many. Denis finds him in the chapel playing the organ like a virtuoso. Summoning him (Hugo Soto) to his office, Denis finds the man's speech is measured and articulate as he explains his presence there as a result of an image being projected from light years away. He introduces himself as "Rantés" (an exotic sounding name in Argentina). Dr. Denis is convinced that Rantés is a fugitive hoping to hide from the law in the hospital. He lets the patient stay however, after seeing how his caring touch helps the other patients. The doctor is amused by his extraterrestrial claims and he suspects that the man is a genius using his talents as a charade.

Polin is an eleven-year-old troublemaker in reform school for unknown reasons. After suffering from harsh treatment at the hands of the staff there, Polin finally reaches a breaking point and snaps, punching one of the supervisors in the face. He is then sent to the police station where he is locked up in a cell and left alone. Polin soon breaks out and travels back to his hometown, a rural fishing village, where he meets up with his best friend and falls back into his old routine—smoking, pickpocketing, shoplifting, skinny dipping with his friends and picking fights with the neighborhood bullies—all the while trying to avoid a run-in with the law, which he knows is inevitable.
