After Carver, a photographer, loses his son to a hit-and-run car accident, he and his wife Rachel divorce, and he descends into self-destructive abuse of alcohol and drugs, unable to let go of his grief. His friend Ed, a tabloid journalist, investigates a murder blamed on local gangs, and, while on a job photographing children at a local school, Carver himself meets a young boy, Jimmy, whose brother was murdered. La jeune chinoise Xiu Yan, décide de quitter son pays natal pour s'installer en France, espérant y trouver une vie meilleure. Originaire de Wenzhou et sans papiers, elle s'installe dans un quartier de Lille chez Madame Deng, qui y tient une petite boutique. Là, elle est engagée comme femme de ménage et doit beaucoup travailler pour gagner suffisamment d'argent afin d'aider ses parents qui sont forcés de déménager à cause des travaux dû aux Jeux Olympiques de Pékin. Six parkour adepts (the Yamakasi without Châu Belle Dinh) open a gym in Bangkok. When the new gym starts to attract the area's kids, a local gang feels challenged.
