Erich Engel, né à Hambourg le 14 février 1891, et mort à Berlin-Ouest le 10 mai 1966, est un réalisateur et metteur en scène est-allemand.

Biography

Erich Engel travaille d'abord au Hamburger Kammerspiele en 1918, puis au Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel pour ensuite s'installer à Berlin et devenir l'assistant de Max Reinhardt et de Bertolt Brecht. Il met en scène l'une des plus célèbres pièces de Brecht : L'Opéra de quat'sous, créée à Berlin en 1928. Rejetant les théories expressionnistes, il prône un style réaliste à travers ses mises en scène.

Parallèlement à son activité théâtrale, il tourne des films à caractère social s'inscrivant dans le courant de la Nouvelle Objectivité. En dépit d'une réputation de gauche, il semble s'accommoder du régime nazi sous le Troisième Reich et réalise pour la UFA des films dont certains ont un caractère de propagande.

Durant la guerre, il continue à travailler au Deutsches Theater, où il avait contribué à la mise en scène de Dans la jungle des villes en 1925 sous la direction de Brecht, et il y met en scène plusieurs spectacles.

Après la Guerre, il poursuit une carrière de metteur en scène au théâtre comme au cinéma, en travaillant pour la DEFA, en Allemagne de l'Est.

Il est décoré de la Bannière du Travail en 1965.

Dans une banlieue de Berlin, vers 1880, Wilhelm Krüger, rentier et propriétaire immobilier, vit avec sa femme. Les locataires dans sa maison sont M. Motes et sa femme et Fleischer, un écrivain, qui vient se reposer quelques semaines. Un soir, tard dans la nuit, Krüger reçoit une livraison de bois qu'il avait commandé déchargé en dehors de sa propriété. Mais la femme de chambre Leontine Wolff refuse de ne pas prendre sa soirée de libre pour mettre le bois au sous-sol. Krüger le fait lui-même, il tombe dans les escaliers et brise la lampe dont le pétrole se répand sur le manteau en peau de castor. Pour se débarrasser de l'odeur, il accroche son manteau sur le balcon pour l'air frais.

"Carlo Cavelli" is the professional name of a world-famous dressage rider (Rudolf Forster), who always wears a mask in his public performances and whose real name is unknown. He is about to appear in Vienna, which causes a sensation. At the dressage competition he comes to the attention of Irene von Ketterer (Angela Salloker), a young woman who after a fight with her mother (Camilla Gerzhofer) has gone to stay with a friend. She is so impressed with him that she decides that she too will become a dressage rider. After a time she manages to obtain personal tuition from the normally unapproachable Cavelli. At first their relationship is very friendly, but when he discovers the name of his pupil, Cavelli attempts to distance himself from her. This is because his life was totally changed by a duel in which he shot and killed his best friend's son, Franz, Irene's brother (Paul von Hernried), an action the memory of which still tortures him. Nevertheless, after an interval, he acknowledges his great attraction to Irene and after establishing that her feelings for him are reciprocated, he decides to ask for her hand in marriage. At the same time however he also asks her to travel to London with him the very next day.

The plot revolves around Dr. Moras (Faber) who visits a barber (Valentin), who accidentally shaves Moras to look like a Chinese person (above, left), and then mistakenly cuts off Moras' rival's head (photo, above, right), which is sewn back on by the barber's assistant (Ebinger), and ends with a sword fight - "The Duel" - and in which Faber is triumphant (actually, saved by the girl!) and Ebinger and Faber embrace in a happy ending in a mysterious Senegalese Salon (photo right).
