Biography

Au cinéma, Eva Maria Meineke contribue à des films sortis entre 1942 et 1982, dont Le Procès de Georg Wilhelm Pabst (film autrichien, 1948, avec Ernst Deutsch et Ewald Balser), Trois hommes dans la neige de Kurt Hoffmann (film autrichien, 1955, avec Paul Dahlke et Günther Lüders) et Une fille... pour le diable de Peter Sykes (film germano-britannique, 1976, avec Richard Widmark et Christopher Lee).

Pavie, fin des années 1970. Nino Monti, un conseiller fiscal connu, paie la place de bus d'une femme à l'air misérable et malade qui n'avait pas la monnaie. Le soir même elle le rappelle pour lui rendre ses 100 lires, et se présente : Anna Brigatti, qui fut son grand amour de jeunesse. Nino est troublé. Il cherche à la revoir, il la pense toujours aussi jeune et belle que celle qu'il a connue. Cette Anna lui dit que la femme du bus était une vieille cousine à elle, à demi folle. The film is set in a future where death from illness has become extremely unusual. When Katherine Mortenhoe (Romy Schneider) is diagnosed as having an incurable disease, she becomes a celebrity and is besieged by journalists. The television company NTV (headed by Vincent Ferriman) offers her a large sum of money if she will allow her last days to be filmed and made into a reality television show – they have already spied on her as she is told of her diagnosis (her doctor is colluding with them) and prepared posters for the show which show her face (to her annoyance when she sees the posters on display before they have contacted her).

Occult writer John Verney (Widmark) is asked by Henry Beddows (Elliot) to pick up his daughter Catherine (Kinski) from the airport. Catherine is a nun with the Children of the Lord, a mysterious heretical order based in Bavaria and is allowed to come to visit once a year on her birthday. But after Catherine arrives, Beddows then insists that she stay with Verney. The order, however, under the sinister excommunicated heretic Father Michael Rayner (Lee), makes all efforts to get Catherine back and uses black magic to stop Verney as he protects her. Verney learns that the order really harbours a group of practicing Satanists, who have prepared Catherine to become an avatar of Astaroth upon her eighteenth birthday.

Aleksey Teodorovic Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a high ranking KGB official who defects while in France. He has with him highly-classified information as part of a deal with Western intelligence for his arrival in the United States. The debriefing is held at Langley by DCI Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) and MI6 representative Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde). Vlassov hands off a list of enemy agents in Western Europe including a deep penetration into NATO. Davies wants to begin operations to arrest the agents; however, those on the list suddenly begin to die off. The CIA also has suspicions over the authenticity of Vlassov's claims. The CIA discovers that a defection photo of Vlassov was taken in the Soviet Union, not in Turkey, judging from the contours of Mt. Ararat in the background. Vlassov also fails a lie detector test after he angrily protests about sexual related questions asked by the CIA during the test.

In Paris the beautiful divorcée Rosalie spends time with César, a coarse but good-hearted scrap merchant. At a wedding she sees her first love David, a shy graphic artist. Despite the efforts of César to stifle the renewed relationship, David and Rosalie run away to Sète on the Mediterranean. Distraught at being abandoned, César tracks them down and offers Rosalie her family's old holiday home on the island of Noirmoutier in the Atlantic, which he has bought. She accepts and all her family come to spend the summer there, but she falls into depression. In an effort to rally her, César goes to find David and persuades him to join them. This well-intentioned ploy backfires because Rosalie then runs away. Left together, the two rivals become good friends. A year later they are enjoying lunch when a taxi draws up and out steps Rosalie.
