Florence Marly (2 June 1919 – 9 November 1978) was a Czech-born French film actress. During World War II, Marly moved to neutral Argentina with her Jewish husband the film director Pierre Chenal where she appeared in several films. She also acted in two of her husband's films while they were in Chile.

Biography

At a dinner, director Fritz Lang once bit Marly's hand. During early years of her acting career, US Consulate mistook her for the left-inclined singer Anna Marly and she was subsequently blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Even after she was cleared from the blacklist, at a party Jack L. Warner "turned his back on [her]". Noël Coward, in a letter called her a "rather sweet" "beautiful Czech lady". She was married to Chenal from 1937 to 1955.

The year is 1990 and space travel is well-established since humans landed on the moon twenty years earlier. U.S. intelligence agent Jim Carter is sent to Japan as a National Weekly Indicator journalist to find Taro Matsudo who is helping the Communists there. Matsudo happens to be Carter's college friend. In his hotel, Carter meets Steffi Novak, a mysterious woman who speaks six languages and wishes to accompany him. Together they both reach a place where Taro is present. However, he does not want to meet Jim. Back at his hotel, Jim receives a telegram informing him to reach Enoshima island. Here he meets Taro who refuses to divulge any information about his commander. He comes to know that Matsudo aspired to be a kamikaze pilot but when Japan surrendered during World War II he sided with the Communists. When Jim returns to his hotel room, he is beaten by a group of Japanese men who tell him to stay away from Taro.

After World War II, ex-serviceman Joe Barrett (Humphrey Bogart) returns to Tokyo to see if there is anything left of his pre-war bar and gambling joint ("Tokyo Joe's") after all the bombing. Amazingly, it is more or less intact and being run by his old friend Ito (Teru Shimada). Joe is shocked to learn from Ito that his wife Trina (Florence Marly), who he thought had died in the war, is still alive. Believing her to be dead, Joe inadvertently deserts her and she has divorced Joe and is now married to Mark Landis (Alexander Knox), a lawyer working in the U.S. Occupation HQ. She has a seven-year-old child, Joe's daughter Anya (Lora Lee Michel), born when Trina was in an internment camp after Joe's departure from Japan just before Pearl Harbor.

As Germany is in the throes of losing World War II, a number of wealthy Nazis and some French sympathizers head for South America in a German submarine leaving from Oslo.
