En 1956, en République démocratique allemande, 19 lycéens de Stalinstadt (actuellement partie de Eisenhüttenstadt) décident de faire une minute de silence pour rendre hommage aux victimes de l'insurrection de Budapest, réprimée par les troupes soviétiques. Ils donnent comme prétexte la mort annoncée par une radio de l’Ouest du célèbre footballeur hongrois Ferenc Puskás, nouvelle qui se révélera être fausse. Avec leurs camarades, Kurt, Theo et Lena deviennent alors la cible du gouvernement, qui cherche à identifier et à punir les responsables de cet acte de rébellion devenu un scandale d'État. À la fin du film, Kurt finira par fuir en Allemagne de l'Ouest afin de pouvoir y passer son Abitur (baccalauréat allemand). La plupart de ses camarades feront de même et quitteront leurs familles lors des fêtes de Noël.

On 27 April 1940, a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 bomber (1H+CT) is shot down near Grotli by a Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Skua (L2940) fighter. Three of the German crew are survivors: pilot Leutnant Horst Schopis (Florian Lukas), Unteroffizier Josef Schwartz (David Kross) and Feldwebel Wolfgang Strunk (Stig Henrik Hoff), set off looking for shelter. The film opens five years after the ending of the first film, with Don (Shahrukh Khan) narrating the story. The European drug cartel bosses meet in the French Riviera to discuss a new threat emerging from Asia: Don is jeopardising their business by undercutting their prices, and the bosses decree that Don must die. Living in Thailand for the last five years, he goes to a remote settlement to pick up a shipment of cocaine. Instead of the expected uneventful transaction, Don fights his way out. He returns to Malaysia, surrendering to Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and Inspector Malik (Om Puri). Don is sentenced to death and sent to prison, where he meets old rival Vardhaan (Boman Irani). The movie portrays an attempt in 1936 to summit the Eiger via the north face by two competing climbing teams. The more prominently featured pair of German climbers are Toni Kurz (Fürmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Lukas) from Berchtesgaden. After being refused leave from the German army (falsely claiming one of them is getting married and the other is to be Best Man), they quit their service in order to make the attempt. They are portrayed as being more interested in mountaineering than in the current politics of the time. The competing team of Austrians that eventually teams up with the German team are portrayed as hoping for a Nazi-led incorporation of Austria into Germany. Watching their summit attempt is their childhood friend Luise (Wokalek), now working for a German newspaper, who is accompanied by her cynical superior Mr. Arau (Tukur).
