Alphonse Marie "Fons" Rademakers (5 September 1920 – 22 February 2007) was a Dutch actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter.
His 1960 film Makkers Staakt uw Wild Geraas was entered into the 11th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Award.
During a career spanning several decades he directed 11 films, including The Assault, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986, and The Village on the River, nominated for the same award in 1959. Making him both the first Dutch director to be nominated and win this award.
He died in 2007 in a Geneva hospital of emphysema, after the life-support machines were switched off at his request.
En 1971, Rademakers a réalisé Mira d'après De teloorgang van de waterhoek de Stijn Streuvels, un film qui pouvait choquer la Flandre conservatrice et qui a révélé Willeke van Ammelrooy dans le rôle-titre. Quelques années plus tard, en 1976, il a tourné Max Havelaar aux Pays-Bas et en Indonésie, d'après Multatuli. Il a obtenu un Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère et un Golden Globe Award du meilleur film étranger en 1987 pour L'Assaut d'après Harry Mulisch. Il a reçu un Ours d'argent pour Ève la joueuse en 1960 et le Bert Haanstra Oeuvreprijs en 1988. Il a également été récompensé lors de festivals à Seattle et à Utrecht. Le Festival du cinéma nordique de Rouen l'a honoré d'une rétrospective en 2000.
Rademakers mélangeait la mentalité bourguignonne des Belges et des Français à la gravité des protestants néerlandais. Il mettait toujours son style au service du récit. En plus de ses propres films, il a également produit quelques films de Lili Veenman, qu'il a épousée en 1955 et avec qui il a eu deux fils, ainsi que d'un film d'Ate de Jong. Il a joué dans De Vijanden (Les Ennemis) (1968) et Vrijdag (Vendredi, jour de liberté) (1981) d'Hugo Claus ainsi que dans Mysteries (1978) de Paul de Lussanet.
À la fin de sa vie, Rademakers s'est établi à Rome puis à Thoiry. Il est décédé à 86 ans d'emphysème pulmonaire dans un hôpital genevois.

Biography
Fons Rademakers est le fils d'un secrétaire de mairie. Il a d'abord été comédien et metteur en scène. En 1955, il a obtenu une bourse du gouvernement pour participer au tournage d'un film à l'étranger (la Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie n'existait pas encore). Fons Rademakers a ainsi pu être assistant-réalisateur auprès de Charles Crichton (The Man in the Sky / Flammes dans le ciel), de Vittorio De Sica à Rome (Il Tetto / Le Toit), et de Jean Renoir à Paris (sur Elena et les Hommes). Rademakers a réalisé son premier film, Village au bord du fleuve en 1958, pour lequel il a obtenu une nomination aux Oscars en 1959. Il fut le premier réalisateur néerlandais à obtenir cette nomination. The film begins in 1881 at Stavoren, a small town on the outskirts of the Netherlands, and follows the journey of Katie's family to Amsterdam, where they hope to escape the grinding poverty of their native town by finding work in the capital. Upon their arrival Katie manages to secure employment at a dye-works, but is fired when she refuses to have sex with the company director. She manages to find a job at a hat shop, where, during a business trip to a brothel, she discovers her older sister Mina is working as a prostitute. Later that evening, back at the hat shop, she is brutally raped by the owner and, as an act of revenge, smashes the shop window.

American Dr. Ben Land travels to Amsterdam to find with Dr. Linden, an expert on aging who is supposedly close to a breakthrough. A recently married young couple, Stefan (John Karlen) and Valerie (Danielle Ouimet), are on their honeymoon. They check into a grand hotel on the Ostend seafront in Belgium, intending to catch the cross-channel ferry to England, though Stefan seems oddly unenthused at the prospect of introducing his new bride to his mother. It is off-season, so the couple are alone in the hotel. Alone, that is, until the sun sets and a mysterious Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) arrives in a vintage Bristol driven by her "secretary" Ilona (Andrea Rau). The middle-aged concierge at the hotel swears that he saw the Countess at the same hotel when he was a little boy. The pair may have a connection to three separate gruesome murders of young girls that occurred in Bruges the previous week. On a day trip, Stefan and Valerie witness the aftermath of a fourth. At the hotel, the countess quickly becomes obsessed with the newlyweds, and the resulting interaction of the four people leads to sadism and murder. Ilona, Stefan, then the Countess all die, leaving Valerie, now transformed into a creature similar to the Countess, stalking new victims.

In January 1945, as the Second World War in Europe is reaching its end, much of the Netherlands remains under Nazi occupation. One night, a Nazi collaborator is shot dead on his bicycle. The family whose house he falls down in front of moves the body in front of the neighboring house, where the Steenwijk family lives. The Nazis, assuming that the Steenwijks killed the collaborator, execute the parents and older brother together with a large number of hostages. Burning the Steenwijk's house to the ground, they imprison the younger brother, Anton. The other person in his unlit cell is an older woman. Anton can see only her mouth. She spends the next few minutes comforting him until he is removed from the cell.
