Frances Drake (October 22, 1912 – January 18, 2000) was an American actress, best known for playing Eponine in Les Misérables (1935).

Biography

Ayant notamment suivi une formation au Royaume-Uni, elle y débute au cinéma (sous son nom de naissance) dans deux films britanniques, sortis en 1933. De retour aux États-Unis — où elle adopte le pseudonyme de Frances Drake —, son premier film américain (tourné en espagnol) sort également en 1933 ; le deuxième est Bolero (1934), avec George Raft et Carole Lombard. Si elle a dans ces quatre premiers films des rôles secondaires, elle obtient en revanche le premier rôle féminin dans le suivant, El Matador (film, 1934) (1934), où elle retrouve George Raft. Au total, elle collabore à seulement vingt-cinq films (dont vingt-trois américains), le dernier sorti en 1942 (The Affairs of Martha, troisième réalisation de Jules Dassin). Elle se retire alors définitivement, pour se consacrer à sa famille.

Deux des films les plus connus de Frances Drake sortent en 1935 : elle est Éponine dans Les Misérables — adaptation du roman bien connu de Victor Hugo —, avec Fredric March (Jean Valjean) et Charles Laughton (Javert) ; et elle tient à nouveau le premier rôle féminin dans Les Mains d'Orlac, avec Peter Lorre.

Pour sa contribution au cinéma, une étoile lui est dédiée sur le Walk of Fame d'Hollywood Boulevard.

Private detective Guy Johnson (James Stewart) is well paid to watch over Willie Heywood (Ernest Truex), a wealthy man who likes to drink a bit too much and gets into trouble as a result. However, when Heywood's recent ex-girlfriend Dolores Gonzalez (Cecilia Callejo) makes a public nuisance of herself over their relationship, a drunk Heywood goes to see her. It is a setup. Dolores is being held at gunpoint by a man, and when Heywood enters her apartment, the mystery man kills Dolores and frames Heywood for the murder. The only clue is a half of a dime incorporated into a piece of jewelry that the victim managed to snatch from her assailant. Guy hurries to the scene soon after and hides his client so he can catch the real killer, but both of them are nabbed by the police, tried, convicted and sentenced: Guy to prison for a year, Heywood to be executed.

A visionary doctor, Dr. Janos Rukh (Boris Karloff) invents a telescope that can look far out into space — into the Andromeda Galaxy — and pick up rays of light that will show the Earth's past. Looking at the past on a planetarium-like dome in his lab, a group of assembled scientists as well as Dr. Rukh see a large meteor hit the earth thousands of years ago. Amazed by the demonstration, the group invites Rukh to go on an expedition to find the meteor that appeared to land in Africa. While in Africa, Rukh finds the meteor but is exposed to strong radiation ("Radium X") from the rock, which makes his touch death on the spot. Dr. Benet (Bela Lugosi) develops a serum that holds this effect at bay and takes a piece of the stone back to Europe and uses it to heal people, including curing the blind. Rukh, suffering from the radiation, glows at night when not treated and is slowly losing his mind.
