Francisco Rabal (8 March 1926 – 29 August 2001), perhaps better known as Paco Rabal, was a Spanish actor born in Águilas, a small town in the province of Murcia, Spain.

Biography

Marié en 1950 à l'actrice Asunción Balaguer, il est le père du réalisateur Benito Rabal et de l'actrice Teresa Rabal. Il est décédé lors d'un malaise au cours d'un vol en avion en provenance du Canada, où il venait de participer au Festival des films du monde de Montréal.

Il a joué pour les plus grands réalisateurs espagnols, de Luis Buñuel (Nazarin, Viridiana, Belle de jour) à Pedro Almodóvar (Attache-moi!) en passant par Mario Camus (Les Saints innocents) ou Carlos Saura (Goya à Bordeaux).

Sa célébrité était internationale : l'argentin Leopoldo Torre Nilsson (La Main dans le piège), les italiens Michelangelo Antonioni (L'Eclipse) et Valerio Zurlini (Le Désert des Tartares), le français Jacques Rivette (La Religieuse) ou encore l'américain William Friedkin (Le Convoi de la peur) ont ainsi fait appel à lui.

The film opens with a dream sequence in which stock market tycoon Paul Marsh discovers a mermaid with razor sharp teeth while scuba diving into a carven pit. Paul awakes on a boat off the shores of Spain, where he is vacationing with his girlfriend, Barbara, and their friends Vicki and Howard. A sudden storm blows their boat against some hidden rocks. Vicki is trapped below deck, and Howard stays with her while Paul and Barbara take a lifeboat to the nearby fishing village of Imboca. During their absence, an unseen creature from the deep attacks the two in the boat.
