Marié en 1950 à l'actrice Asunción Balaguer, il est le père du réalisateur Benito Rabal et de l'actrice Teresa Rabal. Il est décédé lors d'un malaise au cours d'un vol en avion en provenance du Canada, où il venait de participer au Festival des films du monde de Montréal.Il a joué pour les plus grands réalisateurs espagnols, de Luis Buñuel (Nazarin, Viridiana, Belle de jour) à Pedro Almodóvar (Attache-moi!) en passant par Mario Camus (Les Saints innocents) ou Carlos Saura (Goya à Bordeaux).
