The philosopher Denis Diderot, one of the modernists of the French 18th-century Age of Enlightenment movement, is a guest at the château of the Baron d'Holbach. The film depicts the Baron (in reality a major sponsor of Diderot) as a benign host and inventor of amusing machines, including a piganino. Diderot's banned Encyclopédie is being secretly set up, printed and bound in a crypt beneath the chapel, where the noise of the presses is masked by the playing of an organ.

En 1123, pour avoir sauvé la vie du Roi des Francs, Louis VI, dit « le Gros », le comte Godefroy de Montmirail, dit « le Hardi », se voit promettre en épousailles Frénégonde de Pouilles, la fille du duc Fulbert de Pouilles. Since getting divorced, Baroness Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, previously Baroness Dudevant, the successful and notorious writer of sensational romance novels now living under the pseudonym George Sand, in Paris, has been in the habit of dressing like a man. In her romantic pursuit of the sensitive Chopin, whose music she fell in love with before seeing him in person, George/Aurora is advised that she must act like a man pursuing a woman, though she is also advised to avoid damaging his health by not pursuing him at all. With this advice Sand is deterred by a fellow countrywoman who pretends to be smitten with Chopin, the mistress of Franz Liszt, the Countess Marie d'Agoult. Whether the Countess is really in love with Chopin is unlikely; she seeks only to prevent a relationship between Chopin and Sand.

Les événements relatés dans les deux parties de La Révolution française sont nombreux. Les producteurs ont voulu relever le défi inédit de couvrir l’ensemble de la période révolutionnaire et donc tous ses principaux événements (ce qui en fait d'ailleurs un film pédagogique malgré son parti pris clairement dantoniste). L'œuvre passe cependant très vite sur la guerre de Vendée, qui n’est mentionnée que quatre fois, notamment par Robespierre et Desmoulins, qui dénonce le massacre d’ « un peuple entier ». Le film se termine sur l’exécution de Robespierre et Saint-Just en 1794 et omet d'évoquer la suite des événements. Toutefois, la Révolution française s'étend jusqu'en 1799, année du coup d'État de Napoléon Bonaparte.

En 1943, les services secrets britanniques confient une mission particulièrement délicate à un agent français, Pierre Wagnies. The film starts in 1978 Paris. The story line primarily follows three American students as they feel their ways through a year of studies at The Institute in Paris: Laura (Blanche Baker), who ostensibly narrates the goings-on of the film with the postcards she sends to her boyfriend back home; Alex (David Marshall Grant), whose interests aren't so much in studying but with love and life in Paris; and Joel (Miles Chapin), who can't quite seem to live with the courage of his convictions.
