Frank Joseph Perry, Jr. (August 21, 1930 – August 29, 1995) was an American stage and film director, producer, and screenwriter. His 1962 film David and Lisa was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director. The film was written by Perry's first wife, Eleanor Perry. They would go on to collaborate on five further films, before their divorce in 1971. His later films include the Joan Crawford bio drama Mommie Dearest and the documentary On The Bridge, about his struggle with prostate cancer.

On a sunny day in an affluent suburb in Connecticut, a fit and tanned middle-aged man in a bathing suit, Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster), drops by a pool party being held by friends. They offer him a cocktail while nursing hangovers from the night before. As they share stories, Ned realizes that there is a series of swimming pools that form a "river" to his house, making it possible for him to "swim" his way home. Ned dives into the pool, emerging at the other end and beginning his journey. Ned's behavior perplexes his friends, who know things about his recent past he seems to have forgotten.

The film starts as David Clemens (Keir Dullea) is brought to a residential treatment center by his apparently caring mother. He becomes very upset when one of the inmates brushes his hand, as he believes touches can kill him. Cold and distant, he mainly concentrates on his studies, especially that of clocks, which he appears to be obsessed with. We later learn that he has a recurring dream in which he murders people by means of a giant clock.

Long Island housewife Lucy Chadman in the midst of a tarot card reading by her occult sister, Zelda.
