Fred Zinnemann (29 April 1907 – 14 March 1997) was an Austro-American film director. He won Academy Awards for directing films in many genres, including thrillers, westerns, film noir, and play adaptations. Nineteen actors appearing in Zinnemann's films received Academy Award nominations for their performances: among that number are Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Glynis Johns, Paul Scofield, Robert Shaw, Wendy Hiller, Jason Robards, Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Fonda, Gary Cooper and Maximilian Schell.

Biography

Fred Zinnemann naît à Vienne dans l'ancien Empire austro-hongrois, il est le fils d'Oscar Zinnemann et d'Anna Feivel Zinnemann de confession juive. Après avoir suivi des études de droit et de violon, il part étudier le métier d'opérateur à Paris. Il est élève de l'École de la rue de Vaugirard, devenue aujourd'hui l'École nationale Louis-Lumière, dans la promotion Cinéma de 1929) puis à Berlin. Il part pour Hollywood en 1929 et réalise huit ans plus tard son premier film au Mexique : Les Révoltés d'Alvarado. Zinnemann a obtenu l'Oscar du meilleur réalisateur à deux reprises : en 1954 pour Tant qu'il y aura des hommes (from Here to Eternity), drame se déroulant à Hawaï juste avant les évènements de Pearl Harbor puis en 1967 pour Un homme pour l'éternité (A Man for All Seasons), biographie filmée de Thomas More. Ces deux œuvres ont par ailleurs reçu l'Oscar du meilleur film.

Il réalise en 1952 ce qui est considéré désormais comme un chef-d'œuvre du western : Le train sifflera trois fois (High Noon) avec Gary Cooper et Grace Kelly. Le réalisateur calque la durée du récit sur celle du film (l'action se déroule sur 85 minutes) et illustre la solitude du héros par un jeu d'ombres saturées et des cadrages étroits.

Il arrête sa carrière cinématographique après le tournage de Cinq jours, ce printemps là .

Son cinéma traite de la révolte intime et de la révolte politique, des valeurs héroïques et du refus des compromis. Il se veut une réflexion sur la dignité humaine.

Il est le père du producteur et acteur de cinéma Tim Zinnemann .

Il décède des suites d'un infarctus le 14 mars 1997 à Londres.

It is the story of an illicit romance, set in the Swiss Alps. Connery plays Douglas, a middle-aged Scottish doctor on vacation in the Alps in 1932 with a young woman, Kate (Betsy Brantley), whom he introduces as his wife. Douglas has brought Kate to the Alps for a mountain climbing trip. Douglas and Kate are absorbed with a psychological melancholy. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Kate has been in love with Douglas since she was a little girl and that she seduced him away from another woman. In the Paris suburb of Petit-Clamart on 22 August 1962, an assassination attempt is made on the President of France General Charles de Gaulle by the militant French underground organisation OAS in anger over the French government granting independence to Algeria. As the president's motorcade passes, de Gaulle's unarmoured Citroën DS car is raked with machine gun fire, but the entire entourage escapes without injury. Within six months, OAS leader Jean Bastien-Thiry and several other members of the plot are captured and Bastien-Thiry is executed.

Cardinal Wolsey, the Lord Chancellor of England, summons Sir Thomas More to Hampton Court. King Henry VIII of England wishes to divorce his wife and marry Anne Boleyn. The setting is a housing project apartment in New York City near the Brooklyn Bridge.
