Friedrich Gnaß (13 November 1892 – 8 May 1958) was a German film actor. He appeared in 53 films between 1929 and 1958.

Biography

Friedrich Gnaß grandit dans une ferme de Westphalie et travaille après un apprentissage de machiniste comme marin, mineur, serrurier et grutier. À 31 ans, il prend des cours de théâtre à Hambourg et est engagé au Hamburger Kammerspiele en 1925 et à Bytom en 1926 puis vient à Berlin, à la Volksbühne et au Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. Il participe également à divers groupes de théâtre progressistes.

Sa carrière au cinéma commence en 1929. On le remarque pour son visage ridée et sa voix rauque, malgré son âge. Il joue dans les films plutôt à gauche de Prometheus Film. Après l'arrivée des nazis au pouvoir, Gnass joue en dépit de ses convictions politiques dans des films en faveur de ce régime.

De retour d'Amérique, où il a tourné L'Empereur de Californie, il lance des menaces contre Hitler dans le bateau. Bien qu'il n'ait pas été dénoncé, le bruit se répand, il est condamné à une peine de prison à l'automne 1936. Les scènes où il est présent sont retirés, l'acteur n'a plus le droit de tourner.

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il est engagé dans des théâtres berlinois. De 1949 à sa mort en 1958, il est membre du Berliner Ensemble fondé par Bertolt Brecht. Il revient aussi au cinéma dans les productions de la DEFA.

After fellow soldier Johannes Harms reports that a revolution has broken out at home, Thälmann - who leads a revolutionary cell on the Western Front - and his friend Fiete Jansen rebel against their officers, Zinker and Quadde, and desert. Harms dies in a shelling. In Berlin, the American capitalist Mr. McFuller demands to crush the Spartacists. Zinker, now a member of the Freikorps, murders Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. Thälmann hears of it and promises their sacrifice will not be in vain. Jansen falls in love with Harms' daughter, Änne.

During the Great Depression, a rich businessman named Brinkmann decides sink his ship, Anna Susanna, so he would be compensated by the insurance. He orders its captain, Kleiers, to sabotage it while at sea. When Kleiers carries out his instructions, several sailors and passengers notice him. In a fight that ensues, the captain is killed, but not before he manage to shipwreck Anna Susanna. Only a handful of people survive the incident. After they return home, they discover that Brinkmann's insurance fraud worked and he was compensated. They sue him at court and manage to have him indicted.

In a small village on the Faroe Islands, the people's only source of income is trapping a local breed of wild birds. The corrupt capitalist Mr. Brause exploits the locals, forcing them to work for a low wage while selling the birds with a high profit. A disease strikes the village, and many inhabitants become ill. A local physician, Dr. Stefan Horn, discovers that the source of the sickness is the birds. He sends a telegram to a medical research institute in Copenhagen. The scientists in the capital corroborate his suspicions. Brause destroys their letter and tells the villagers that they can continue with their trade. Eventually, Stefan and his cousin, Arne, manage to expose the truth before the people. Brause flees the islands.
