The story begins in Ajmer, in the state of Rajasthan, where Rajnandini Khandelwal (Sandeepa Dhar) passes her 12th class examination and is the state-topper, winning three scholarships. Everyone is happy, but in keeping with her father's conservative tastes, he and her mother want Rajnandini to get married. However, Rajnandini wants to study further, desires that her mother supports, and so her mother tricks the father to send her to Bombay to a relative's house in Bombay, ostensibly to learn the culinary arts, as preparation for her marriage; however, secretly, the mother enrolled her in a college, and instead of staying with her aunt, as had been agreed with the father, arrangements have been made by the mother and her sister (aunt) to put her up in a hostel.

Vicky (Akshay Kumar) is an aspiring singer who is devoted to his true love, Anjali (Amisha Patel). He gets a big offer from a music company in America and accepts it. Young Raj Malhotra (Akshay Kumar) lives with his elder brother, Rohit his sister-in-law Kiran, and a niece. After an accident fractures his leg, he is unable to walk for some time. Due to psychological reasons, he cannot walk even after the fracture heals. When the Malhotras move to Dehra Dun, Raj befriends their neighbour, young tomboy Kajal (Lara Dutta), as both share a common passion for aeroplanes. Kajal encourages Raj to walk, and he succeeds. Years later the two continue to be fast friends, and everyone expects them to marry soon. Raj secretly loves Kajal and is waiting for the right time to propose her. However, Kajal sees him only as her best friend. Raj is recruited by the Indian Air Force and goes for training for a year and a half. After his training gets over, he rushes to Kajal to propose her, only to find out that she has given her heart to a multimillionaire, Karan Singhania (Aman Verma). Raj tells Kajal that Karan is the best life partner for her, but does not reveal his true feelings. Kajal and Karan get married and during the reception party, Kajal comes to know about Raj's feeling for her. Hurt by the fact that she did not see his feelings for her despite being Raj's best friend, Kajal asks him to move on in his life as now she is a married woman. Thereafter the Malhotras move to Nainital, and Raj relocates to Cape Town for training.

Arjun Poojari lives in a small village with his mother, father and unmarried sister. The entire village is ruled by Bade Thakur Jagawar Choudhry and the Villagers are grateful for all the work he has done for the village. One day Arjun finds out that Jagawar's younger brother Vikram, had attempted to molest his sister, So he beats Vikram and takes him to Jagawar. Arjun revolts and turns a dreaded Dacoit and his only mission is to kill all the Choudhry brothers. Now Vishal Choudhry becomes a Police Inspector and is transferred in that Village, but is not able to stop Arjun killing Vikram. As the brothers were in shock, Arjun also kills Vishal. Thus the brothers seek police protection and hires a hit-man named Devaa - a dangerous man who would never fail in his mission.
