Gary Grimes (born June 2, 1955, in San Francisco) is a former American actor.

Biography

Gary Grimes' first major role was in the 1971 film Summer of '42, playing a teenager who has an affair with a beautiful older woman, played by Jennifer O'Neill. For that role, Grimes was nominated in 1972 for a Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Newcomer, as well as the Male and a BAFTA Award as Best Newcomer.

Grimes also starred in the sequel Class of '44 (1973), which followed his character to college.

Grimes' other film credits include Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973) alongside John Wayne, The Spikes Gang (1974) with Lee Marvin and Ron Howard and the cult Disney film Gus (1976), about a mule that kicks field goals. He was offered a TV series during that time period, but turned it down.

Grimes retired from show business in the late 1970s, still lives in Los Angeles and has remained out of public view since that time. "I got to the point where the work wasn't up to the quality that I wanted," Grimes told American Profile magazine in 2011. "I'm very happy in my decision."

In the state of Virginia in 1864, during the American Civil War, family patriarch Charlie Anderson (James Stewart) and his six sons Jacob, John, James, Nathan, Henry, and Boy (who is 16) run the family farm, while his daughter Jennie (Rosemary Forsyth) and daughter-in-law Ann (Katharine Ross) take care of the housework. The family has no slaves. Though Charlie attends church weekly and considers himself a "God fearing" man, he doesn't give God credit for anything, but takes credit for himself especially during dinner prayer. He internally blames God for taking his wife from him. His family is constantly late for church and will force people out of their seats to make room for his family, much to the annoyance of the preacher and congregation.
