Biography

D'abord acteur de théâtre, Gavin Muir joue à Broadway (New York) dans vingt-et-une pièces, la première étant Enter Madame, avec Blanche Yurka, représentée 350 fois d'août 1920 à avril 1922. Il se produit pour la dernière fois sur les planches new-yorkaises en 1938-1939.

Au cinéma, hormis une apparition dans un court métrage musical de 1932, il débute véritablement dans quatre films sortis en 1936, dont Marie Stuart de John Ford (avec Katharine Hepburn dans le rôle-titre, Fredric March et Florence Eldridge) et Le Pacte d'Henry King (avec Tyrone Power et Madeleine Carroll).

Parmi ses autres films notables, mentionnons La Mascotte du régiment de John Ford (1937, avec Shirley Temple et Victor McLaglen), L'Escadrille des aigles d'Arthur Lubin (1942, avec Robert Stack et Diana Barrymore), Les Conquérants d'un nouveau monde de Cecil B. In British Burma the son of the Sawbwa, a local ruler has been killed, apparently by his European mining partner, Jim Brecan (Robert Ryan). The Sawbwa wants him caught and executed, while Captain Cardigan wants him caught for trial. In 1191, King Richard the Lionheart, along with several other European monarchs, is in the Holy Land intent on retaking Jerusalem from the Saracens. There is much infighting and outright treachery in the European encampment however. Two nobles in particular, Sir Giles Amaury and Conrad of Montferrat, want to eliminate the English king and attempt to have him assassinated. Severely wounded and on his death bed, Richard is brought back to health by a Saracen doctor recruited by one of his loyal knights, Sir Kenneth of Huntington. The king recovers from his wounds but when he hears that Sir Kenneth wishes to marry Lady Edith Plantagenet, the knight is banished only to be taken in by the very doctor who treated the king and who has an altogether different identity.

Lou Francis (Lou Costello) and Bud Alexander (Bud Abbott) have just graduated from a private detective school. Tommy Nelson (Arthur Franz), a middleweight boxer, comes to them with their first case. He wants her uncle, Dr. Philip Gray (Gavin Muir), to inject him with a special serum he has developed which will render Tommy invisible, and hopes to use the newfound invisibility to investigate his manager's murder and prove his innocence. Dr. Gray adamantly refuses, arguing that the serum is still unstable, recalling that the formula's discoverer John Griffin was driven insane by the formula and did not become visible again until after he was killed. However, as the police arrive Tommy injects himself with it and successfully becomes invisible. Detective Roberts (William Frawley) questions Dr. Gray and Helen while Bud and Lou search for Tommy.
