Detective Superintendent (Commissaire Principal) Pierre Niemans (Jean Reno), an investigator well known in Paris, is sent to the small rural university town of Guernon in the French Alps to investigate a brutal murder. The victim's body is found bound in the fetal position and suspended high on a cliff face, his eyes removed and his hands cut off. Niemans learns that the victim was a professor and the University's librarian, Remy Callois, and he seeks out a local ophthalmologist for an explanation to the removal of the eyes. Dr. Cherneze, once on the University staff, explains that the school's isolation led to in-breeding amongst the professors, with increasingly serious genetic disorders. Recently the trend has reversed, with the local village children becoming ill and the college babies remaining healthy. Cherneze hints that the killer is leaving Niemans clues to their motive by removing the body parts that are unique to each individual - the eyes and hands. Niemans questions the Dean and examines the librarian's apartment, where he finds images of athletic "supermen" juxtaposed with texts on genetic deformities. The Dean's assistant (and son) Hubert translates the title of Callois' Ph.D. thesis as, "We are the masters. We are the slaves. We are everywhere. We are nowhere. We control the crimson rivers.

Héléna Bourdelle, called "The Bourdelle," is a great singer and wife of maestro André Bourdelle. Joining the Resistance, he is killed by the accidental explosion of a grenade. Following the defeat, the family's mansion is taken over by German forces, leaving the family occupying a few back rooms, complaining to the Kommandantur about his excesses and those of his men. Maxime is overwhelmed boss of a company working ambulance. Deceived by his wife, he refuses to forgive her. Maxime knows that Olga and her father Jacques reports are not looking good, but it takes her. On the way back, Olga divert the route to go for the black boy Tiemoko, son of an African deportable without papers, to hide the home away from authorities. Maxime take the opportunity to spend a few days with her parents, away from his occupational and marital troubles. Despite the quarrels of his parents, he discovered his mother's concern for her father, who, under the air of jovial loving good bottles and cigarettes banned his wife is in poor health. The son and rediscover the feelings of love and generosity of his parents, his "heroes" torque model in which he seeks a way to overcome his own problems. The small Tiemoko just cement this family solutions.

The characters from the first two films get together again, 27 years on, in Sardinia. The obsession with sex has not disappeared but has taken a backwards step in the face of financial preoccupations. Bernard and Nathalie Morin (Gérard Jugnot, Josiane Balasko), are the parents of a son who reveals a homosexual liaison; J.C. (Michel Blanc) and Gigi (Marie-Anne Chazel), are living together; Jérome Tarayre (Christian Clavier), is divorced and seems unhappy in his new life; Christiane Weissmuller (Dominique Lavanant), has joined an esoteric sect and wants revenge on Jérome who messed up an operation he performed on her; Popeye (Thierry Lhermitte), has become the proprietor of the hotel where the group has re-assembled, and is as unfaithful as ever.

1942, zone occupée. Après avoir été démobilisés, Tassin, Pithivier et le sergent-chef Chaudard s'en sont retournés à leur vie d'avant. Chaudard a repris la direction de sa petite quincaillerie provinciale, entre son épouse, Suzanne, et des très (voire trop) régulières visites de son beau-frère Gorgeton (Gérard Jugnot) qu'il ne supporte plus. Il entretient également par intérêt de bonnes relations avec Lambert (André Pousse), le chef de la milice locale qui lutte contre les forces judéo-maçonniques et recherche le commandant Gilles, l'un des chefs de la Résistance locale. Alors que Chaudard doit recevoir la visite de Tassin et Pithivier, venus passer quelques jours de vacances pour évoquer le bon vieux temps de la 7e compagnie, il est loin de se douter que son beau-frère cache avec la complicité de Suzanne le commandant Gilles dans son cellier.
