Birth 13 october 1892
Death 30 september 1934 (at 41 years)

Gertrude Howard was an American actress of the silent and early sound film eras. She broke into films in 1925, appearing in The Circus Cyclone, directed by Albert Rogell. In 1927, she would play the wife of Uncle Tom in Uncle Tom's Cabin. She appeared mostly in minor or supporting roles, such as Queenie in the original version of Show Boat (1929), and Martha in Christy Cabanne's Conspiracy. Her appearance as Beulah in the 1933 Wesley Ruggles film, I'm No Angel, led to her being forever linked to Mae West with the famous line, "Beulah, peel me a grape".

In Howard's short career she would appear in twenty-two films. That career was cut short by her untimely death in 1934 at the age of 41. Mae West was touched by the actress' death and helped raise the funds necessary for her funeral.

Hearts in Dixie unfolds as a series of sketches of life among American blacks. It featured characters with dignity, who took action on their own, and who were not slaves. The plot focuses on Grandfather Nappus (Clarence Muse), his daughter, Chloe (Bernice Pilot), her young son, Chinaquapin (Eugene Jackson), and her husband, Gummy (Stepin Fetchit). To make certain his grandson Chinaquapin does not end up like his father or become tainted by the superstitions that dominate the community, the grandfather decides to send the boy away. One particularly tender scene shows Nappus' love for his grandson, whom he sends North for schooling. The film ends with the youngster's departure aboard a riverboat.
