Giancarlo Santi commence sa carrière en tant qu'assistant de production de Gian Vittorio Baldi, avant de devenir assistant réalisateur de Marco Ferreri (Le Lit conjugal, Le Mari de la femme à barbe, Controsesso , Marcia nuziale ). Mel l'interprète comme l'accomplissement de la Prophétie, celle de la venue du Messie. Ils se mettent donc en route, suivis par de nombreux habitants, issus de toutes conditions sociales : notables, marchands, paysans, artisans, mendiants, voleurs ou prostituées, tous désirent célébrer l'événement et accomplir offrande au Sauveur futur. Au cours de ce long chemin, parsemé de risques et d'obstacles, et, au cours duquel hélas tous ne reviendront pas, deux caravanes s'unissent à eux. Ils découvrent enfin le Rédempteur dans un village retiré et sous les traits d'un nouveau-né. Ils lui rendent témoignage de piété et d'infini respect. Toutefois, il leur faut se méfier d'une ville-garnison voisine, soumise à un monarque despotique et envieux. Les pèlerins, craignant une éventuelle agression, se dispersent en effaçant toute trace de leur passage.

The film portrays two conflicts that take place around Flagstone, a fictional town in the American Old West: a land battle related to construction of a railroad, and a mission of vengeance against a cold-blooded killer. A struggle exists for Sweetwater, a piece of land near Flagstone containing the region's only water source. The land was bought by Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), who foresaw that the railroad would have to pass through that area to provide water for the steam locomotives. When crippled railroad tycoon Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) learns of this, he sends his hired gun Frank (Henry Fonda) to intimidate McBain to move off the land, but Frank instead kills McBain and his three children, planting evidence to frame the bandit Cheyenne (Jason Robards). It appears the land has no owner; however, a former prostitute (Claudia Cardinale) arrives from New Orleans, revealing she is Jill McBain, Brett's new wife and the owner of the land.
