Le criminel et cambrioleur Kriminal, toujours muni de son masque et de sa combinaison de squelette, s'est encore échappé de prison. De retour à Londres, après avoir été incarcéré à Istanbul, il décide de diriger, sous une fausse identité, une maison de repos pour personnes âgées qu'ils tuent afin de s'emparer de leurs primes d'assurances-vies. Mais c'est beaucoup trop facile pour Kriminal qui, en manque d'adrénaline, s'ennuie profondément. Par mégarde, la complice de Kriminal brise une statuette exotique à l'effigie d'un bouddha. Ils y découvrent à l'intérieur une partie d'un plan accompagné d'un message crypté. Incomplet, il permet de récupérer deux toiles de maître d'une valeur inestimable cachés dans un lieu secret.

Ennemi public numéro 1, il est condamné à mort par pendaison après avoir volé la couronne d'Angleterre. Mais, le jour de son exécution, il parvient à s'évader sans savoir que son évasion a été préparée et commanditée par l'inspecteur Milton qui, pourtant, est responsable de son arrestation. Visconti's retelling of the Electra story starts with Sandra/Electra (Claudia Cardinale) returning to her ancestral home in Italy - and reviving an intimate involvement with her brother (Sorel) which troubles her naive husband (Michael Craig) - on the eve of an official ceremony commemorating the death of her Jewish father in a Nazi concentration camp. As ever with Visconti, he is ambivalently drawn to the decadent society he is ostensibly criticising; and Armando Nannuzzi's camera lovingly caresses the creaking old mansion, set in a landscape of crumbling ruins, where the incestuous siblings determine to wreak revenge on the mother (Bell) and stepfather (Ricci) who supposedly denounced their father.

En raison d'une avarie sur deux de ses moteurs, un avion de ligne américain, qui volait en direction d'Athènes, est contraint de se poser à Beyrouth. L'équipage doit attendre 24 heures pour que ce soit réparé avant de poursuivre leur voyage (d'où le titre du film dans sa version originale). Toutefois, l'un des membres de l'équipage, le chef de cabine, semble particulièrement nerveux à l'idée de ce séjour inattendu. Des gens louches le pistent et il échappe par deux fois à un enlèvement. L'équipage, notamment le chef pilote, le protège des agissements du cartel tandis que le passé de trafiquant du stewart se révèle peu à peu. Au bout de 24 heures, l'appareil redécolle.
