Gennadi Vengerov (August 27, 1959 – April 22, 2015) was a Soviet, Russian and German film and theatre actor, narrator and voice over talent.

Biography

He was born on August 27, 1959 in Vitebsk (Belarus). After graduating from the Technical School for Architecture and Construction and a short-term employment as a construction engineer, he started his creative career as an announcer of the Vitebsk Regional Radio. Не performed at the People’s Theatre in Vitebsk. In 1980 he was invited to be an actor at the professional scene to the Yakub Kolas Belarus National Academic Drama Theatre.

Following his military service in the Soviet Army in 1983 he entered the School-Studio (Institute of Higher Education) at the Moscow Art Theatre for the course by professors Viktor Monyukov and Vladimir Bogomolov. In 1986, on his 4th course year, together with his course mate Michail Yefremov - they established «Sovremennik-2» theatre. In 1989 he was invited to the troop of Moscow Academic Mayakovsky Theatre.

Gennadi Vengerov continued his career in Germany in 1990 as an announcer of Deutsche Welle Radio and an actor of Dusseldorf Theatre. From 1995-2000 he has been an actor of Bochum Theatre.

Since 2004 he has been actively filming in Russian cinema and TV projects, participated in theatrical productions in Moscow, as voice over talent he made audio records for documentaries, fictional films and advertisements. He is the brand voice of the Russian News Broadcasting Station - RSN and the Russian brand voice Euronews international channel. In 2009 he narrated TV-Show "Men’s Stories with Gennadi Vengerov" on the Russian REN TV channel.

During his career Gennadi Vengerov starred in more than 140 movies in Russia, USA, England, Austria and Germany. At various times he worked with Jude Law, James Cromwell, Sean Bean, Til Schweiger, Christian Slater, Ving Rhames, Mario Adorf, Colm Meaney, Franka Potente, Jan Josef Liefers, Klaus Löwitsch and other famous actors. He is widely known and recognized in Russia for the roles of blacksmith Vulkan (The Fighter series) and Major Volkov (Hour of Volkov series) and among German audience for the role businessman Viktor Strelnikov (Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten).

As the film opens, Captains Craig McCenzie (Christian Slater) and Mike Reed (Freddy Rodriguez) are United States soldiers on a mission to find Osama Bin Laden in an unspecified location in the Middle East. In 1933, as Adolf Hitler and the Nazis come to power in Germany, actor and comedian Hans Zeisig (Michael Herbig) and his partner, Siggi Meyer (Jürgen Vogel), have a successful comedy act at a Berlin cabaret doing impersonations of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Meyer is politically active in the Communist Party and through him, Zeisig meets the attractive Dutch Resistance fighter, Frida (Thekla Reuten). Zeisig is apolitical; he's dreaming about a career in Hollywood. He finds the growing political tension an unpleasant nuisance, but Meyer is endangered by the Nazis' power grab. He arrives one day at the theater with a black eye from an attack and says he is going to go underground. Another performer, a Nazi supporter who caricatures a Jewish man, makes a wisecrack about Meyer's black eye. They get into a backstage brawl, fully made up and in costume—the Nazi as a Jew and the Communist as Hitler. The fight careens its way from the dressing room to the stage, with "Hitler" on top of the "Jew". The audience, larded with uniformed Nazis, initially assumes it to be part of the show and cheers. When the melee ends, the show goes on, but Meyer flees.

In 1942, Vasily Zaytsev (Jude Law), a shepherd from the Ural Mountains who is now a soldier in the Red Army, finds himself on the front lines of the Battle of Stalingrad. Forced into a suicidal charge by barrier troops against the invading Germans, he uses impressive marksmanship skills—taught to him at a young age by his grandfather—to save himself and commisar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Nikita Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins) arrives in Stalingrad to coordinate the city's defences and demands ideas to improve morale. Danilov, now a Senior Lieutenant, suggests that the people need figures to idolize and give them hope, and publishes tales of Vasily's exploits in the army's newspaper that paint him as a national hero and propaganda icon. Vasily is transferred to the sniper division, and he and Danilov become friends. They also both become romantically interested in Tania (Rachel Weisz), a citizen of Stalingrad who has become a Private in the local militia. Danilov has her transferred to an intelligence unit away from the battlefield.

Medical student Paula Henning (Franka Potente) wins a place in a summer course at the prestigious University of Heidelberg Medical School. Her grandfather had a great name there before retiring, including being the discoverer of a useful drug, Promidal. They are tutored by Professor Grombek, who announces the hard work ahead. He also tells them that he will be using the elimination system, where the six lower grades will be periodically discarded. During one of their courses on anatomy, the body of David, a young man that Paula met and helped on the train trip, turns up on her dissection table. She is then humiliated by Professor Grombek, who dares her to cut and dissect the heart. She remarks that the body presents strange cuts, but this is dismissed as bad handling by the morgue caretaker. She decides to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. When she goes to cut a sample for an independent test she is amazed to find a triple "A" mark near David's ankle. She is then startled by the medical school's mortuary preparetor, who wants to know if Professor Grombek is aware of her acts.
