It iw Mr. Hood's birthday, and he has been eagerly anticipating a quiet dinner at home with his family. Darla then mentioned that she has invited her friends o the celebration: Alfalfa, Porky, and Philip. The well-meaning trio drive Mr. Hood to distraction with loud and interminable choruses of "Happy Birthday, Mr. Hood." Then they present their ill-conceived presents: a frog, a duck, and a cat. When the kids are not arguing over their favorite comic-strip characters, they are busily devouring Mr. Hood's birthday dinner. Mr. Hood, disgusted over the whole affair, declares he is going out to get a bite to eat and leaves.

At the advice of a doctor (Billy Gilbert), Stan and Ollie travel to the mountains in order for Ollie to recover from gout. They park their travel trailer near a deserted cabin recently occupied by a gang of moonshiners who had been ousted by Prohibition authorities; the moonshiners, attempting to hide the evidence, had dumped their brew into the well, which Stan and Ollie now proceed to drink from, thinking that it is healthy mountain water ("that odd taste is just the natural iron in the water").

Otto Phocus (Franklin Pangborn) is a haughty photographer hellbent on taking a formal portrait of a terrified Spanky (George McFarland). The film is set in the home of a mad scientist called Professor Noodle. Professor Noodle has just developed a rejuvenation solution that reverses the aging process. Stan and Oliver are chimney sweeps and arrive to sweep the chimney. Oliver goes on to the roof and Stan stays below at the fireplace. Stan begins to shove the sweep up the chimney and knocks Oliver backwards and down through the skylight. Oliver comes back on to the roof and begins to pull the sweep up. Stan has hung on to the sweep and arrives at the roof. Oliver drops him back down through the chimney. Stan doesn't have enough extensions for the sweep and decides to use a rifle to shove the sweep the last part of the way. The gun goes off nearly shooting Oliver. Stan decides to go up to the roof and as he opens the skylight he knocks Oliver off the roof and down onto a greenhouse. Hardy finally falls down the chimney dislodging many bricks, sending a cloud of soot all over the living room and onto the butler, and damaging the piano. The butler says something about an electric chair, and stalks out. Stan and Oliver start to clean up the soot around the fireplace. They become distracted and Stan shovels the soot into Oliver's trousers.

The children live in the Bleak Hill boarding school, where they are yelled at, punished, and browbeaten by the ghastly old headmistress. The day begins with the headmistress waking the boys up and telling them to get their chores done or they will get a beating and nothing to eat. In school, however, they are taught by the headmistress' husband, the gentle and lovable Old Cap, who runs the school in an informal manner. Cap wants to do something nice for the children, since their school meals usually consist of mush and milk. Just as the headmistress leaves the boys' sleeping quarters, Old Cap comes in to say hi to them. At that time, he promises that when he gets his back pension they will all leave that place and live well with tons of presents for the children. After the boys are up, the headmistress tells the boys to milk the cow and that they will be thrashed if they spill any.

Ollie's house is a mess after a wild party from the previous night. Ollie receives a telegram from his wife (who is on vacation in Chicago), which tells him that she is returning home in the afternoon. Fearing his wife's wrath, he calls Stan over to help him clean up. Things go downhill and they make more mess not less. Ollie becomes frustrated and lights the oven the wrong way, turning on the gas first instead of lighting the oven. The result is an explosion that trashes the living room and kitchen, as well as Ollie's hat.

Ordered out of town by angry Judge Beaumont, vagrants Stanley and Oliver meet a congenial drunk who invites them to stay at his luxurious mansion. The drunk can't find his key, but the boys find a way in, sending the surprised woman inside into a faint. They revive her with what they think is water, but is actually gin, and all get tipsy in the process. Outside, the drunk realizes he's at the wrong house and stumbles off. Mrs. Hardy is annoyed that her husband Oliver seems to spend more time with his friend Stanley than with her. After a furious argument, Mrs. Hardy says that she will leave him if Ollie goes out with Stan again. Stan suggests that Ollie adopts a baby, which he does. Ollie is in the hospital with a broken leg. Stan pays him a visit (he did not have anything else to do) bearing a "thoughtful" gift of hard-boiled eggs and nuts. Ollie complains he cannot eat hard-boiled eggs or nuts and asks Stan why he did not bring a box of candy. Stan explains boxes of candy cost too much and that Ollie did not pay him for the last box he had brought him. While eating an egg, Stan knocks over a jug of water and Ollie hits him on the head with a bedpan. Dr. Gilbert comes in to examine Ollie and tells him he should be in the hospital at least two months, to Ollie's delight; this is the first time he remembers having such a wonderful rest. But Stan causes so much trouble, the angry Dr. Gilbert orders both patient and guest out of the hospital at once. "You had nothing else to do so you thought you'd come around and see me," says an irritated Ollie. "Here I was for the first time in my life having a nice peaceful time and you had to come and spoil it. Get my clothes." Before leaving, Stan first manages to destroy a pair of trousers belonging to Ollie's roommate (who is also going home) and then accidentally sits on a hypodermic needle loaded with sedative. The nurse comes in, discovers this and nearly collapses into hysterics. Stan attempts to drive Ollie home, but is nearly asleep at the wheel thanks to the sedative, and the car careens wildly through the streets in a token comic "reckless driving" sequence of hilarious (yet obviously staged) traffic chaos...until Stan finally smashes the car between two streetcars, bending it into a 90 degree angle so that he can only drive round and round in circles.

The comedy duo are working at the circus. They first appear in the Pantomime horse and then as assistants to Destructo, a strongman. The circus goes bankrupt after the Big Top is destroyed when Laurel and Hardy cause Destructo's cannonball-catching act to go wrong. The circus can't pay them their wages so Oliver is given a gorilla called Ethel and Stanley a Flea Circus as a pay off. Despite the film's title Ethel isn't a chimpanzee. She is dressed in a ballet tutu and hat. Stanley and Oliver need to find a room to stay in overnight and they go to a guest house. The landlord gives them a room but refuses to let Ethel stay. A lion named MGM after the MGM lion has escaped from the circus. Stanley and Oliver try to smuggle Ethel into their room whilst avoiding MGM. They decide to leave Ethel outside for the night and go to bed. They sleep in the same bed as in all Laurel and Hardy films. Stanley falls out of bed and decides to sleep in the spare bed. Ethel climbs in through the window and gets into bed with Oliver. Ethel steals the blanket from Oliver so he decides to use the spare bed as well as Stanley. They both begin to itch and find that the flea circus has escaped into the bed. Another guest at the house puts some music on and Ethel begins to dance. The landlord has a wife called Ethel and when Oliver tells the gorilla to stop dancing the landlord thinks his wife is in the room with Stanley and Oliver. The landlord confronts Stanley and Oliver with a pistol. At the end the gorilla gets hold of the pistol and begins to shoot, scaring everyone out of the room.

Sailors Laurel and Hardy disembark and book in a sleazy hotel. The owner Mugsie Long intends to marry a young girl against her wishes, but Stan and Ollie come to her rescue. After fleeing the hotel, the boys find out they've left their money in their room, but an old pal of Ollie's offers $50 if Ollie will fight in a boxing ring that night. Ollie agrees but predictably makes Stan the fighter and himself the manager. The catch is Stan's opponent is Mugsie himself. Knowing how tough Mugsie is, Ollie makes a seemingly wise bet with a drunk on Mugsie to win. The drunk accepts the bet, making himself seem to Ollie a sucker. Seeing Stan as his opponent, Mugsie loads his glove with metal before the fight begins. However, during the course of the fight, Mugsie and Stan accidentally switch gloves, causing Mugsie to comically run away from Stan knowing he has the loaded glove. Stan, who doesn't realize the glove is loaded despite it weighing his arm down, manages to knock out Mugsie when he tries to pull the loaded glove off his hand and winds up knocking himself out. Ollie winces in defeat while the drunk chuckles in triumph; turns out he wasn't so much a sucker after all. Mugsie's second calls a policeman and tells him Stan had been fighting with a loaded glove. Ollie is forced to give the drunk the money they received for entering the fight, to Stan's consternation, until Ollie explains, "I bet on you to lose and you double-crossed me!" Stan, enraged at his own buddy and manager betting against him, starts to knock Ollie out cold...but as he draws his fist back, he accidentally knocks out the policeman investigating about the loaded glove, ironically still on his hand! Stan and Ollie flee the stadium in terror.
