William Hal Ashby (September 2, 1929 – December 27, 1988) was an American film director and film editor.
Il commence à travailler à Hollywood dans les années 1950 en tant qu'employé puis assistant-monteur pour les studios Universal, notamment sur des films de William Wyler, George Stevens et Franklin Schaffner. Au cours des années 1960, Ashby devient monteur pour Tony Richardson et surtout pour Norman Jewison avec qui il travaille pour la première fois en 1965 comme monteur sur le film Le Kid de Cincinnati. Son travail avec Jewison vaut à Ashby d'avoir une nomination aux Oscars pour le montage du film Les Russes arrivent avant de remporter le trophée l'année suivante pour Dans la chaleur de la nuit.
La collaboration entre Ashby et Jewison se poursuit alors que ce dernier produit le premier film réalisé par Ashby, une comédie dramatique intitulée Le Propriétaire. Malgré une critique favorable, le film ne connait qu'un succès limité.
Les films suivants d’Ashby sont tous, à des degrés divers, considérés comme des œuvres marquantes du cinéma américain des années 1970. Ainsi Harold et Maude, une comédie d'humour noir qui passe d'abord inaperçue lors de sa sortie en 1972, atteint au fil des années le statut de film culte. En route pour la gloire est une biographie du chanteur Woody Guthrie. U.S. Navy petty officers Billy "Badass" Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) and Richard "Mule" Mulhall (Otis Young), are awaiting orders in Norfolk, Virginia when they are assigned a shore patrol detail escorting young sailor, Seaman Larry Meadows (Randy Quaid), to Portsmouth Naval Prison near Kittery, Maine. Meadows has drawn a stiff eight-year sentence for the petty crime of trying to steal $40 from a collection box of his Commanding Officer's wife's favorite charity. Despite their initial resentment of the detail, the oddly likeable Meadows begins to grow on the two Navy "lifers" as they escort him on a train ride through the wintry north-eastern states; particularly as they know what the Marine guards are like at Portsmouth and the grim reality facing their young prisoner. As the pair begin to feel sorry for Meadows and the youthful experiences he will lose being incarcerated, they decide to show him a good time before delivering him to the authorities.

Elgar Enders (Beau Bridges), a man who lives off his parents' wealth, buys himself an inner-city tenement, in the transitional neighborhood of 1970 Park Slope, Brooklyn, planning to evict all the occupants and construct a luxury home for himself. In the spring of 1968 in California, Sally (Jane Fonda), a loyal and conservative military wife, is married to Bob Hyde (Bruce Dern), a captain in the United States Marine Corps who is about to be deployed to Vietnam.
