Hal Yates (26 July 1899 – 1 August 1969) was an American screenwriter and film director. He wrote for 96 films between 1924 and 1953. He also directed 88 films between 1926 and 1953.

He started his career in entertaintment in a vaudeville double-act called 'Yates and Lawley'. Yates first worked at the Hal Roach Studios where he directed a few early Laurel and Hardy comedies (including the lost Hats Off),and later worked at the RKO studios directing short films featuring Edgar Kennedy and Leon Errol.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and died in Los Angeles, California.

An honest cab driver (Laurel) picks up a woman (Anita Garvin) and her "baby", who is actually a midget in disguise. He does not realize his passengers are crooks. When they get out of the cab without paying and leave the meter running, Stan follows them aboard a ship, where he exposes the crooks.

Stan and Ollie are salesmen attempting to sell a washing machine; they fail constantly after several near misses. One would-be sale has them carrying the machine up a large flight of steps, merely to find out that a young lady wants them to post a letter for her. The boys later get into an argument knocking off each other's hats, which eventually involves scores of others. A police van eventually carts all those involved away except Stan and Ollie, who afterwards try and find their own headgear amongst the hundreds of others lying on the street.

Melsa and her friends are notorious pranksters, so the detective, Lieutenant Mike Brent (Levene), does nothing to investigate the murder. Ames writes an editorial decrying Melsa's "prank", and she sues him for libel.
