Installé aux États-Unis où il mène toute sa carrière, Harmon Jones débute au cinéma comme monteur, contribuant ainsi à vingt-et-un films américains, de 1944 à 1950. Entre autres, il assiste les réalisateurs Henry Hathaway (quatre films, dont 13, rue Madeleine en 1947), Elia Kazan (quatre films, dont Le Mur invisible en 1947, qui lui vaut l'année suivante une nomination à l'Oscar du meilleur montage) et Joseph L. Mankiewicz (La Maison des étrangers en 1949).Ensuite, il est réalisateur de quinze films américains (dont des westerns), de 1951 à 1966. Charlie Yuckapuck (Morey Amsterdam) and Annie (Rosie Marie) work as a zany cook and waitress at the diner run by Mr. Travis (Richard Deacon), located across from a busy factory, visited by Danny Thomas, Forrest Tucker, Joe Ploski and other celebs in cameos. Meanwhile, the Soviet KEB believes that Charlie is really defecting Soviet cosmonaut Yasha Nudnik, and sends Comrade Olga (Carmen Phillips) et al. to observe him, all members of a spy ring run by Mr. Big (Jack Heller). One day lawyer Crumworth Raines (Moe Howard) arrives and announces to waitress Magda Anders (January Jones) that she has inherited a bookstore at Updike University, causing Charlie and Annie to switch jobs to the bookstore, where undercover U.S. government agent Jim Holliston (Michael Ford) volunteers to help. Features a cameo by Irene Ryan as Granny, and Steve Allen, Milton Berle, and Carl Reiner as bookstore customers. Peggy Mondo, Cliff Arquette, and Nick Adams have cameos as KEB agents. A scout for the St. Louis Cardinals comes to a small town in the Ozarks to assess pitcher Jerome Herman Dean (Dailey). Dean, with an over-abundance of self-confidence, is certain that the club wants him to start immediately and is surprised that he is sent to the minor league Houston Buffaloes. Despite his obvious talents, Dean is teased about his rustic clothes and goes to a department store to buy new suits. He meets pretty credit officer Patricia Nash (Dru) and courts her with great vigor. At an exhibition between the Buffaloes and the Chicago White Sox, Dean is dismayed to see Pat with another man but pitches an almost perfect game. The White Sox players razz Dean, calling him "Dizzy," but he adopts the nickname, which is picked up by sports reporters. Dean asks Pat to elope, and although she is stunned by his proposal, agrees to marry him.

When printer John R. Hodges (Monty Woolley) is forced to retire at age 65 because of a company policy, he decides to do something about it. Dyeing his hair black, he poses as Harold P. Cleveland, the president of his former employer's parent company and goes on an inspection tour of his old workplace, with the firm's nervous, mystified executives in tow. While walking around the plant, Hodges runs into Joe Elliott (David Wayne), the boyfriend of his granddaughter Alice (Jean Peters), and winks at him to let him in on the joke. Afterward, Hodges complains about the lack of experienced older employees, causing company president Louis McKinley (Albert Dekker) to promise to rescind the retirement policy and rehire all those affected by it within the past year.
