Harry Allen was an Australian-born American character actor of the silent and sound film eras. He would begin his acting career in the 1923 silent film, The Last Moment, in a supporting role.

In his 27-year career Allen would appear in over 100 films, mostly in supporting and smaller roles. Some of the more notable films he appeared in include: Of Human Bondage (1934), starring Bette Davis and Leslie Howard; the Marx Brothers' classic, A Night at the Opera; the original Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable; William Wyler's 1942 Academy Award-winning film, Mrs. Miniver, starring Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, and Teresa Wright; Jane Eyre (1944), starring Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine; the Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor version of National Velvet (1945); and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), starring George Sanders. His final appearance on film was in the 1949 film, Challenge to Lassie, starring Edmund Gwenn. Allen would die on December 4, 1951, and be buried in Glen Abbey Memorial Park.

Set in Victorian London, the story concerns a music hall chorus girl, Belle Adair, aka Rose Lynton, who blackmails a gentleman, Michael Drego, after seeing him leave the house where another dancer, Daisy Arrow, was found murdered. In wartime England during the Blitz, Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) is released from Lembridge Asylum. While waiting for a train to London, Neale visits a village fête hosted by the Mothers of Free Nations charity. He guesses the weight of a cake for a shilling, and is urged to go to the palm reader's tent to have his fortune told by Mrs. Bellane (Aminta Dyne), an older woman. He asks her to ignore the past and tell the future, which startles her. She cryptically tells him to take another guess at the weight of the cake at 4 pounds 15½ ounces. Neale does so and wins the prize. Then a young blond man hurries to see Mrs. Bellane. People try to persuade Neale to give the cake to the blond man, but he refuses.
